well don has created a domino effect. im being summoned to slumber. bye all.

Wow. I am so behind-- 700 or so posts behind.

This is crazy.

I read every tenth page or so, and wow have we covered a lot of topics.

Anyone care to fill me in?

darn you giant. we have been bouncing around.
bioengineering

but alas i must be off. timezones suck. : P

An Engineered intimate supercontinent which likes Hillary’s jiggle factor nicknamed destiny.

Is that pretty much it?

(I like how St. Hudson you have written some 150 posts since I was last here)

i can’t keep up w/ this thread…=P

lobster, i think you and i are the only ones in Pacific time zone, since everyone else is snoozing. in addition to panicpower (aka mls, idk for sure there’s so many nicknames, except for me :() we’ve also talked about welfare and capitalism

off to view the SAT prep forum now (soooo boring compared to this one)

i’m the pacific time zone, but i can never keep up with this here. i get soooo lost. this is like the AIM chatroom that you leave for 2 minutes, and you just try to catch up when you can. seriouslyyyy you guys are quite the chatters ;)

Just checking to see if anybody is on before I go eat some delicious pancakes. I hadn’t realized that I had written over 150 posts, GRL. I guess it goes to show how excited I am for TASP or, at the very least, that I’m addicted. (:

eastern time zone owns this thread.
and that is true hudson you were like a newbie when you came to this thread.lol.

morning all! new debate topic yet? how about affirmative action?

I’m game…

ah hahaha

didnt michigan do away with aa fridge?

That’s right.
The best thing that ever happened to UMich.

i think aa is a well-intentioned program, but has gone awry. sure, geography and racial diversity should be important, but merit should outrank all other aspects.

i wonder where cira and don are… usually this thread advances much quicker :)

again this rule can be seen as something that was more necessary in the past than now. am i gonna lie and say i want it gone. not so much cuz it may be something that gets me into a school.
what i do hate is when people start throwing around that someone wouldnt be in a school if it wasnt for aa.
and i <3 umich.

Aargh! This thread has grown disproportionately large since last I visited! I second giantredlobster… anyone want to clue me in?

at the moment we are discussing affirmative action. previous subjects include, but are not limited to love, presidential candidates, capitalism, welfare, and nicknames. for further information, please contact mira (earilmadith) don (st. hudson), fridge (wink), mls (panicpower), or myself (i don’t have a nickname yet :()

there’s your morning dose of formal lawyer talk :)

The flaw with racial AA is that is based on solely that: race. For example, while AA was created to assist black Americans who continue to experience the legacy of that “racial trauma” of slavery, Jim Crow, etc., the ones who truly benefit and capitalize on the system are those rich, upperclass immigrant kids from the Caribbean and Nigeria or other parts of the Africa who come to study in America.

I agree that AA is well-intentioned but misdirected. And the “points” system of acceptance at UMich (i.e. if you need say, 150 points to get in, you get 20 bonus points for being black/Hispanic/Amerindian) was horrendous.

While it’s not at all fair to say that those who benefit from AA would not have gotten into a university otherwise, it would be difficult to deny that there are many qualified candidates of equal merit who get shafted because they are not a URM.

I don’t believe “diversity” is created by collecting a group of people of different skin colors or races. I don’t feel that the black kid living down the street in my suburban middle-class neighborhood would add more diversity to a campus than I would solely by being black.
