Happy Chinese New Year, you guys!!

I’m trying to use my very best double think and remember this thread but forget the application itself. So far…so good?

Happy Chinese New Year, you guys!!

I’m trying to use my very best double think and remember this thread but forget the application itself. So far…so good?

Lol, I’ve pretty much completely forgotten about the application. After reflecting on my essays, they were absolute crap save for the first one. I’ve already begun planning my summer without even factoring it in. XD

^

I really don’t think anyone can seriously factor TASP into their summer this early on considering how competitive the application process is.

^Lol, true, but ya know that sliver of hope that everyone has? Yea, it’s gone for me. :)

Argh. I didn’t realize so much of February had passed already. A little over two weeks left.

What other programs are you guys thinking about? I really don’t think there’s anything as prestigious/ selective/ awesome as TASP. Right now, I have my eye on Columbia’s summer program; they have an introductory linguistics course which sounds pretty good. (I’m not going to talk about the price. Eeeeek.)

I only applied to TASP because my family can only afford programs that are free. My alternative may just be summer school.

@happysunshine: A lot of programs offer Financial Aid and scholarships to students who demonstrate need. I would examine my options more in your case. I’m applying to four programs this year, and all of them offer some kind of need-based scholarships.

jsa’s application deadline is today… should i apply now and worry about tasp later? because what are the chances of me getting in, right? :

Wow, I hadn’t accessed this thread since I posted some questions about two months ago…
Haha, I was surprised to find about 50 additional pages of posts xD. I really hope we’ll be notified early in March. Even though TASP has been moved to the back of my mind, I’m still very apprehensive. Oh well, about two weeks to go?

Yeah happysunnyshine, financial aid is definitely available for other programs.

Last year I attended a creative writing program for free pretty much. And this year, as backups for TASP, I applied to 3 other creative writing programs that all offer need-based aid.

There are definitely options for those of us who can’t afford to pay thousands of dollars. ![]()
You just have to shop around a bit.

waggish, would u mind sharin some names of these programs with me! i feel like i waste hours on google searching for these low cost summer programs and find nada

Well, last summer I went to the California State Summer School for the Arts, and did the Creative Writing program.

CSSSA is $1.4k for CA residents and like ~$5k-ish for out of state students. Financial aid isn’t available if you don’t live in CA though. I live in CA and was able to get full financial aid. It’s need-based. Good option if you live in Cali.

This year I applied to Iowa Young Writers’ Studio and Kenyon Review Young Writers. Both of them offer need-based aid.

For the non creative writing ones, I know there’s Clark Scholars which is not only free but offers a $750 stipend. Deadline for that is March 5th.

Here’s a pretty solid compilation of programs. Cost info is listed as well I believe.

Previous TASPers have made backup plans in case TASP didn’t work out.

I know that I, personally, applied for Carnegie Mellon’s Diversity Music program and got in, and that program is free. There’s also RSI, which is rather late to apply to but it’s also a free program. I know right after TASP one of my TASPers went on a trip to Korea, and I’m pretty sure that trip was free too, but I don’t remember what the program was called.

There are opportunities, although some are a tad late.

ahh thanks so much for that list! unfortunately tasp is the only humanities one haha! there are sooo many programs for science out there and barely any for what i’m interested in! booo. :(

^I know!! But I would probably apply to Clark Scholars to do research in philosophy/English. It may not be a bad alternative actually.

is anyone else FREAKING OUT?

because i am.

which is mildly uncharacteristic.

I’m definitely freaking out.

I originally thought I didn’t have a chance, but since I just found out I got an interview for UWC I’m thinking I might… (similar essays, same time, etc.)

Now that I’m letting myself even consider the possibility of going to TASP, I’m freaking out. And yes, totally uncharacteristic of me—I usually submit applications and forget about them.

So when exactly do we get notified about TASP? And do you get notified by the same time whether you get an interview or not?

Let us freak out together.

It varies every year, but it’s usually the first week in March. But don’t like bombard them with calls. I emailed them on March 2nd last year, and got a yes reply on March 4th. Then the interview notifications came out over the next few hours.

They send rejection notices later.
