Hi Guys, I really need some help making a decision soon! Here’s what’s up. I interned for an assemblyman last summer where I researched and wrote proposals for him here in California. His field director just offered me an unpaid internship in D.C. for this summer. Just a few minutes ago I was contacted from D.C. about arranging housing they have for me. But I would love to attend Telluride, if I get in! I feel 50/50 either way. Which EC do you think looks better to HYPS, Georgetown, UVA? I really appreciate as many counselors’ opinion as you guys (or parents) can give. Thanks so much and please respond soon!

@TrueLove: While I can’t speak for how it looks to the colleges, I’d argue for doing Telluride over the internship. Firstly, you may be able to get opportunities to do political internships later in your life (next year or college), but Telluride appears to be such a unique experience that it’s really now or never.

Also, in terms of the internship itself, while different types of internships will have different duties, the political ones are generally really low-level work. I was a U.S. House of Representatives Page last summer. I was lucky and got picked to work in the cloakroom, which meant that I got to be close to the floor of the House all the time, and actually interact with Congresspeople and their staffs, but most of the Pages spent most of the time just running between office buildings. I don’t know the exact nature of your internship of course, but I’d bet it’s mostly pretty menial work. Is it still a worthwhile experience? Yes, especially if you get lucky and get a cool assignment or something. Is it worth passing up Telluride for? Doubtful.

I’d take the internship. They’re about equal for college applications. Plus, over 1000 people apply for TASP which only has 50 spots this year, so it’s highly doubtful that you’d get in. However, in the unlikely event that you do get accepted, you could just cancel on the internship. Also remember that an internship is better than nothing. It’s nice to have a backup plan. :)

E-mail was in my inbox when I got home. : )

Yay! Congrats! :D

Wait…Vince011 you got the interview? I’m just assuming that, but you know what they say about assuming…Haha.

Okay! Well, I’m going to start applying for scholarships with the essays I wrote, I felt bad applying before I knew if I made it to the interview stage. I’ll make sure to capitalize “White House” this time, too. facepalms

I told my friends and family about that after I found out, they shook their heads at me in shame.

Congrats! ![]()
Gah, I’m getting really nervous. Don’t know if I’ll be able to stop myself from sending an e-mail…

Do they notify you about the interview via email or letter? Also what is the email address you should email?

Have other people also received emails?

Wait…do they send an email to all the acceptees at once? In that case, I didn’t make it. :(

So sad :((((((( Oh well, time to start looking for an internship or something… :(

and btw…CONGRATS :DDDDDD

Vince, did you email and ask about your status or did they just email of their own accord?

^of their own accord.

Congrats, Vince! I believe the emails have been sent, which is a change from last year, as two other applicants I know have received the happy news as well.

Well, guess the rest of us didn’t get in.

Oh well. :(

Should the rest of us count ourselves out then if we didn’t get an email?

:/

Oh well. Fine. ![]()
I need a few minutes and I will again be happysunnyshine.

I can’t answer definitively either way, as this is a change from last year as I mentioned and I don’t have secret insider information from TA. I’d say that if you don’t have an email in a few days, you can assume that you did not get an interview, as I’m not sure why they would send the emails in waves (though it is possible that they could). If I were an applicant, I’d email Telluride asking about my decision, but that’s because I’m antsy. It’s up to y’aaall.

:/

Does anyone know Telluride’s e-mail address?

I made finalist as well. I’m thankful, I don’t know how great my essays were but for the first time in a LONG while I put my maximal effort into something that I wanted to do (2 weeks of pure writing and editing). I’m not celebrating or anything though, since uh, it’s not over.

And yeah, they e-mailed of their own accord, I didn’t ask first.
