There is a HUGE difference between the aerobed and the Coleman. I’ve had both and no comparison
Our D has been sleeping on a double high twin Aerobed since her back began bothering her with her old (very old) mattress in mid-June. She didn’t want to buy a new mattress and boxspring at that point. She has been comfortable on the Aerobed. It sprang a leak last month, which we fixed. Now it is deforming oddly-- the walls are ballooning out. I assume it can’t take the pressure of being inflated all the time. I think it’s good for infrequent use, but not so good for continuous use.
We have a few Aerobeds. Their chief problem is the one that all air mattresses have, and that is that they are absolutely freezing in the winter because the air in the mattress takes on the ambient temperature in the room. I’m assuming this is why you want an alternative. If so, the thing that has worked for us is to cover the air mattress with a down blanket and then sleep on top of that with whatever covers you want.
I have never had a problem with an Aerobed being too cold. We keep our house at 65 to 68F in the winter.
My D slept for two years on an aero bed living in Indiana. She had the model @abasket described with the headboard. She never complained of cold air and she is at heart a complainer. She never got around to buying a “real” bed. Look for a sale at Costco.
When we visit our other D we used a camping air mattress from Big Five. It worked fine but kept springing leaks. We finally bought them a bed for the guest room. After a hotel stay we figured we would be better off buying the bed.
You can buy a sheepskin cover for a mattress, it helps with temperature regulation. We got our sheepskin at Costco. Great stuff! It was $120 well spent.
This is expensive but this is an air mattress with a frame https://www.frontgate.com/ez-bed-inflatable-guest-bed-with-constant-comfort-pump/362835?SourceCode=ZZ51120&intlShippingCtx=US%7CUSD&catargetid=120245420002462287&cadevice=t&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI57ONoZHH3gIVSIezCh279ATWEAYYASABEgIOX_D_BwE
Costco no longer has the topper I got, but here is an option from Amazon.
We have a heated mattress pad on our regular bed. I love it. I wonder if you could put this on the aerobed to limit cold underneath. https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003ZSHDEK/ref=oh_aui_i_sh_in_o1_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1
https://resourcefurniture.com/. Clever furniture! And the front gate bed with constant pump is great but a bit $$
We have this bed. https://www.amazon.com/Aerobed-Queen-Size-High-Hands/dp/B00LX4MSOS/ref=pd_ybh_a_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=26HK9HJD4R480N2SVCH0 I found it on sale for $80.
Very comortable. Some of the poor reviews are from people who used the bed as a permanent bed for several months. It is perfect for a temporary bed. I cannot imagine why people think they are too cold unless they are using it on a slab floor during cold weather.
If you need a full size mattress for permanent use IKEA has some options that expand after you bring them home.
My D uses the memory foam topper she used to use on her dorm bed on the Aerobed, as well as a mattress pad.
Last night the double high Aerobed gave up the ghost. Now she’s using and older, low to the floor Aerobed, just until we can go buy her a new mattress set.
My kids use a self-inflating double on vacations. (Like some of the links, 14+ inches high.) No complaints. The better the product, the less chance of springing a leak. I’d think, when visiting grown kids, you want something that stores small. My kids would deflate theirs during the day, since it was so easy to inflate later.
I don’t know if you can use a heated pad on an air bed. But there are so many ways to put someting under the sheets, to help. Just like camping. And if the ambient temp in the room is decent, I’m trying to understand why the air in the mattress would be colder than that.
Update: went to the above DD1 and she and SIL gave us their bed and they slept on an older airbed in the upstairs area. It worked well and she felt comfortable as we did not have to negotiate the stairs at night. So, at your suggestions, I bought a queen aerobed from Costco and a mattress pad topper to be delivered to DD2 who just moved south to start a great job. She just got her own small apartment. This is for us visiting her and any friends that come visit. (BTW Costco no longer carries them in the warehouse stores, just online orders starting Jan 2019). We are very excited for her!
FYI. We just saw aerobeds on display at our local Costco.
^ Really? Maybe it was just the Costco I called in DD2 town.
Costco stock does vary depending on area! I was thinking of this thread when I saw the aerobed yesterday. And voila - the update. Glad you had a nice trip and everyone slept comfortably.
I use these & made my big guy husband sleep on it for several nights, no hip sinking through to the floor, we’ve been very happy.
Our Costco store also currently has the queen aerobeds.
We bought one for D1’s apt going on 4 years ago now so that when one (or two) of us visited we could avoid hotel fees and spend our $$$ on other visiting entertainment. At the cost of one or less hotel nights it has been used so many times - D2 slept on it last night!!!
So I ordered the queen aerobed for DD2 and now I was going to order for DD1 and the queen disappeared from Costco’s website. Weird. Only twins are available.
