We want to continue to stay in D and SIL’s extra room when visiting them and am looking at all options of air mattress, etc. We have used an air mattress that works if there is a sleeping bag spread out on top of the mattress and under us to keep the cool from creeping up. I cannot see any decent alternatives. I wish a foam mattress magically would roll up or fold and take very little space to store in their closet, but have not found one. Murphy bed and sofa bed would not work. Any favorite air mattresses or alternatives?
Other than camping equipment, there aren’t that many alternatives. How big of a bed do you need? There are chairs that unfold into a twin foam mattress bed. Saw one at Costco the other day.
There are also things like this:

Good reviews.
@rockymtnhigh maybe this one from Frontgate? I have not tried, but I see it folds up relatively small…(see the video for folded up view) https://www.frontgate.com/ez-bed-inflatable-guest-bed-with-constant-comfort-pump/517740?listIndex=2
What do your D and SIL want in the room? No bed at all?
There really is no room for a permanent bed or chairs. Interesting challenge other than air mattress.
What about 2 of these side by side? There is a case available for them. I’ve seen 4" thick versions on Amazon, too.

have you tried the Aerobed brand of air mattress? We borrowed one for a guest, who said it was very comfortable. Blew up quickly, was almost knee high on me, and when deflated, was about size of two backpacks.
Just saw a video of how to shrink wrap an Ikea memory foam mattress for storage using a vacuum cleaner. Now that was interesting.
We have two twin aerobeds. Can put them together with king sheets. Pretty comfy, thick enough so cold doesn’t come up through the floor. Can vary the firmness. Blow up and deflate fast!
We’ve slept on aerobeds and folding foam mattresses. They were all fine. Two twins offers more flexibility than one larger mattress.
Gosman’s link — we called it the spider bed. D had one her senior year in college a a few years after.
It was her main bed, a queen, and we shared it when I visited. What I liked is that it is up off of the floor.
Areobeds. I love how they inflate!
Aroebeds way more comfy than the typical fold out sleep sofa with the thin mattress and always that metal bar that you can feel and makes them so uncomfortable. I can’t tell you the number of times we’ve dragged the thin mattress off the frame and put it on the floor when hosts have sleeper sofas.
Aerobeds are very comfortable and simple to store.
OP: Do your D and SIL want you to stay with them? If someone told me that they didn’t have room for a spare bed or room to store a mat I would think maybe they were trying to send a different message.
I slept on an air mattress with a foam (egg crate type) mattress on top for 2 years. It was actually very comfortable. I did put a blanket between the air mattress and the foam for extra warmth.
Have to disagree Mater. The kids seem to have an extra room, just don’t want a bed in the spare room taking up space (based on my reading of the OP). Not easy to store a rarely used mattress in an apartment.
Not sure how much you want to invest but a murphy bed could be an option.
Another vote for Aerobed. Costco often has sales on their models. We have used the queen sized one we bought for D’s apt over 3 years ago often and it’s still going strong. Very comfortable, rolls up to fit in a bag about the size of a sleeping bag bag - even has a little “headboard!”
Any great prices that you know of for an aerobed? If you see one, would you post here.
We slept on a double high queen Coleman air mattress for a week or two until our furniture arrived when we moved. Also have a twin extra high one. Easy to fill with the electric pump and not too low. Could be cheaper than the Aerobed. The convenience of rolling up an air mattress that is extra high and of good quality is a great solution.
