S wants to dye his hair orange for spirit week at school. You have NO idea how honestly delighted I am at this!! (I’m sure his dad and my H think I’m crazy, but I really am glad S wants to do this!)

Where on earth does one buy temporary hair dye? When I was much younger than I am, the local drug stores carried spray-on, wash-out hair color (and I know, because I had some. Purple. ), but no longer.

Does anyone know where I should look, what stores I should take him to? Any and all help is appreciated!

The stores that sell Halloween stuff carry it. Since it’s not that time of year, you might try stores that carry party stuff. Kids I know used to use jello. Not sure how well that worked.

Yup - party stores will have the spray-on kind.

Bear in mind that the number of cans he’ll need will vary depending on what his natural hair color is! S1 is a real towhead and his light blond hair picked up orange really easily (that would be the year that the seniors decreed that the freshmen all had to be Rugrats for Halloween, and he was Chuckie. . . ), but I know kids with darker hair had a much harder time. Also bear in mind that it’ll paint his skin, too, so in addition to using it in a well-ventilated room, be sure you have him cover his ears, forehead, etc., with old towels!

I’ve also heard that Jello is great for wilder colors, like blue, but haven’t needed to try that yet. Then again, we have dozens of years of Halloween left, since S2 (another towhead) is only 5!

Thanks! Spirit week is this coming week (so mail order, though my favorite way to shop, is out); some Walgreens carry the stray-on temporary stuff, but I don’t have one very close by. Party City carries it, too, and there’s one between S’s high school and home, so that’s where we’ll go when I pick him up from his club meeting.

Thanks!

I’m curious about how one uses Jello to dye hair; hadn’t heard of that before. I’m sure there must be directions for how one does this on the web, so am off to Google that, just for my own edification!

Not Jello…Kool-aid. Not the kind you drink politically.

Make up Kool-aid in your desired color. DO NOT Add Sugar! That cannot be stressed enough. Then lean over the sink or go outside and color. You may have to use a couple of mixes to get the color strong enough. The longer you leave it on, the longer the color will stay…some people can keep color even after washing hair.

Warning: It will stain clothing and towels. If you can wear your bathing suit (depends on the weather) and do it outside, you might keep things cleaner. Use a dog towel or an old beach towel to dry.

Jello and Kool-aid… oh, the things I’ve learned! This appears to be not quite so temporary as I suspect S wants.

I’ve also checked out manicpanic.com, and am wishing either that Manic Panic was sold locally or that I could run up to NYC to get some. Dang!!! I think the Electric Banana and Electric Lava together would do the trick nicely!

OMG. Thanks, juba! There’s a Hot Topic close enough to us to make this feasible. I’m sure S has never been there (it being in a mall we don’t usually go to – haven’t been there in some years); I may never get him out of the place!

(“Mom! I’m NOT GOTH!!!” Yeah, yeah, yeah, you just like to wear all black all the time, I know, I know!! But still, I think he’ll like the place, probably A Lot!)

I can vouch for Sally’s carrying Manic Panic and several other brands of temporary hair dye. Be prepared that it might last a little longer than spirit week, and although it will last it will fade.

Probably not a problem for him, but if you try to color over dye that hasn’t completely faded it you can end up with some pretty funky colors. I tried to dye me hair back to brown from the purple I’d colored it before winter break, before coming back from winter break, and I ended up green with purple spots, not quite what I was going for.

Thanks, all! And jessetfan, I’m sorry, but I lol at the green with purple spots!

Supplies have been procured! We stopped at the party store; they had a spray-on and Electric Lava Manic Panic. S has a long tail, so I divided it into two pieces and tried each product on the tips. So far, he prefers the Manic Panic; we’ll know for sure after 1.) it dries completely; and 2.) he washes his hair.

Actually, he needs a haircut, but I told him that after he turned 14, I wouldn’t make him get his hair cut anymore. (Tired of arguing with him about it, and it’s his hair, after all.) It wouldn’t be a great tragedy if either of these didn’t wash out completely and he had to get his hair cut to get rid of it… :D

My 10 yr old daughter wanted green hair for her school’s St Patrick’s Day dance. I went to a party supply store and found spray on hair color, but when I saw the main ingredient was propane, I decided she could settle for a green head band with decorations on it.

Many natural dyes are found in food. Beets for example.

As for Coca-Cola, I often use it as a treatment for vomiting. It was first recommended to me by a Canadian pathologist, when I got ciguatera from bad fish. You open it, stir it to flatten it a bit, then sip it slowly. It works astonishingly well. I even paid $2 for a single can in Serengeti National Park when I got food poisoning there. Saved my day.
