Terrible First Semester Grades

I am a freshman at Georgetown this year and I have atrocious first semester grades. Sad thing is I worked hard and still did terrible. I am new to this site so please don’t laugh at my grades.

Chem I = (B-)
Bio I - I don’t know my grade exactly, but the lowest I got was a B+ (I will find out exactly in a couple of days)
Political Science I= (A-)
Latin - I honestly have no idea about this grade, could be anywhere from a (B+) to an (A-).

This means that the highest I got this semester is a 3.35.

The lowest I got this semester is a 3.25.

I don’t think I can make it into medical school. I don’t even think I can do much better next semester. I don’t know what went wrong. I did all the readings for my classes/worked all the sample problems in the back of the book/studied for all my tests-quizzes/did all the supplemental worksheets/went to office hours/did all my homework. I don’t know if I can do much better next semester. I don’t think I can handle Georgetown, should I transfer to some other school where I might be able to do better(i.e. my state school)? My parents(both are doctors) told me I won’t get into an MD school because of my grades.

…you call that “terrible”? “Atrocious”?

You need to stop being so neurotic.

^ My understanding was that anything below a 3.5 and medical schools will throw away your application. My parents who are both practicing physicians have told me there is virtually zero chance of me getting into an MD school in the United States. If I am struggling in intro classes at Georgetown, I would imagine that I would do much worse in upper level courses.

While the grades aren’t truly atrocious, I understand where you are coming from. Starting college is a rough transition for some students. By the way you’re describing those grades, I’m gauging that you did much better in high school. While transferring to another school could possibly raise your grades if you feel as though Georgetown isn’t the right fit, perhaps it was just the adjustment period that threw you off. Regardless, talk it over with your advisers at Georgetown, specifically any pre-med adviser that is available to undergraduates. If you’re prepared to buckle down and study even harder, it’s possible to pull your grades up since it was only a single semester.

^ My lowest grade in high school was a 88 and I scored a 2270/2400 on my Sats with a 1510/1600 on reading and math only

Well then you’re obviously intelligent. Maybe the issue isn’t studying harder it’s studying smarter. Learn what professors expect on examinations and try to study relevant material more. I’ve made the mistake of reading the textbook and wasting valuable study time when the professor takes the exams straight from the powerpoints and barely touches on extra material. Sometimes you need connections from older students that have had the course before too. I just took one last term where there was virtually no way to score well on the exams unless you had copies of previous exams to base your studying off of. The professor was well aware of this and even encouraged it because he recognized the time constraint on the tests.

Basically, you’re not tanked from not doing as well as you hoped in one semester. Find a way to fix what wasn’t working for you before and you’ll be fine. Also, don’t assume that all upper-level courses will be difficult, you may find some you enjoy.

I am so depressed about the A- in Poli Sci. I needed a 92 in the class to make an A. I made a 91.7. What the hell?

You didn’t make the cut, and that’s life. If you think there was a grading error, then go ahead and contest it, but otherwise, better luck next time.

Thank you all for the help.

Grade Update:

Biology- (A-) Extremely suprised about this and really happy.
Chem- (B-)
Latin - Still don’t know yet
Poli Sci - (A-)

So my gpa for Texas Medical Schools (I am a Texas resident and they don’t use the +/- system) is: around a 3.7 without my Latin Grade. I can finally calm down, sorry if I seemed extremely neurotic.

My gpa for schools that do use the +/- system is around a 3.4 without Latin. Need to step my game up next semester.

see…not so bad. you can definitely recover from this. I’m a freshman at Boston College. And I thought I was doing terrible in my intro Bio/Chem classes until I discovered I got A-'s in both. I think everyone is just so stressed about their grades and assume the worst even when in reality its not nearly that bad.

^ thanks for the help, I am going to definatly reevaluate my studying patterns and adapt.

So final grade update:

Poli Sci- (A-)
Bio - (A-)
Latin - (A)
Chem - (B-)
