My math and science grades from freshman and sophomore year are abysmal. However, I am not seeking a career/major that requires much knowledge of either subject. Will my bad grades [C’s/D’s] in math and science impede my chances of admission at competitive schools?

It lowers your GPA and you’re competing against kids who don’t have C’s and D’s there. So yes, it will affect your admission chances at top schools, even if your intended major isn’t math/science related.
