The title pretty much says it all. For the past few months, I’ve been asked countless times if I’m excited to be moving so far to attend such an amazing school. In response, I’ve lied each time and have said that I’m ecstatic. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’m finally opening up and coming to CC because it’s a community that’s always been here for me when I needed it, and I really wouldn’t have made it this far without you guys.
I could really use some guidance. I’ve chosen my courses (Chem 110, Chinese 131, CompSci 101 and Writing 101 with
Jacqueline Kellish), and I’m not sure where to go from here. Should I be pre-reading so that I’m not lost when I start class? How should I become involved and find things to do outside of class?
No you should enjoy the rest of your summer and do nothing for as long as possible (seriously). This way you can come to campus in the fall fresh and able to grind it out. Trust me your classes are not difficult. If you put in the time you will do well.
If you have never had comp sci, you could easily find a free online course to start learning whatever language the course is taught in. Other than that, enjoy your summer.
RELAX. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Duke picked you because of your smarts. You’ll be fine.
I would urge you to be careful in the first few weeks of classes. Some people, still excited and anxious about situating themselves socially, will try to focus on going to every “social” event early on in the Fall semester or going to Shooters every Wednesday or Saturday night and not take classes seriously until after they see their first midterm grades (which sometimes is too late). Although Duke maybe a playground for the rich for some, for the majority of people it’s a rigorous institution designed to challenge and educate you; don’t forget the latter.
