Hello! I’m an international incoming freshman student at Virginia Tech, intending to major in Biology. I recently received my final results, achieving an overall score of 67% with 3 As, 4 Bs, 1 C, and a D. Although this result represents a significant improvement over last year’s 53%, I’m worried about my admission offer being rescinded. I didn’t submit my mid-year grades or predicted scores, and the university’s website clearly states that admission offers may be rescinded if grades decline. What are the chances of my offer being rescinded?
If you had similar grades when you applied, you should still be ok. It’s when a straight A student becomes a straight C student that raises a red flag.
Actually a C or two is usually OK. The D is the bigger problem. In your admission offer does it say anything about the conditions? If not, you need to contact the admissions office ASAP.
PICK UP THE PHONE.
Don’t spend the summer dreading every email. Pick up the phone. Ask to speak to the adcom from your region. Be prepared with a simple, humble, brief explanation-- not an excuse-- “This semester was not my best work. I focused on my XYZ classes- where I got A’s and B’s, and didn’t realize I had fallen so far behind in the class I got a D in. I’ve learned a very valuable lesson”.
Don’t you want to get through the summer without terror? Be proactive and pick up the phone.
Offers may be withdrawn under any of the following circumstances
- If your final grades are significantly lower than your previous academic performance in your final year or semester. Please note: if your semester grades fall below a 2.0, your offer of admission is automatically rescinded.
- If your final transcript(s) reveals that you have failed to complete the university’s minimum requirements for admission.
- If your final transcript(s) is not received by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as directed.
- If your self-reported academic record (SRAR) and your final official transcript have a major discrepancy, your offer of admission may be withdrawn.
- If your post-admission criminal record inquiry is not cleared.
The D may raise some eyebrows. Nobody here can give you an answer with any certainty. Hopefully it will be OK.
It said that your offer of admission is contingent upon continued academic success and review of your final high school transcripts.
I got a D in physics theory while in physics practical i got an A. So there is only 1 D but i am terrified.
I would contact admissions about this. Better to tell them now than for them to find out later. They may ask for an explanation for the grade - hopefully you have a good explanation.
I concur:
PICK UP THE PHONE.
No one on this website can confirm what the school will do. You will continue to be terrified until you contact them.
Do not wait for a Friday. A lot of staff is out, especially on holiday weekends (like Mother’s Day), and most campuses will be holding or have already held graduation ceremonies and full staff will be out or have limited hours for the summer.
