My DD was accepted and considering along with U of SC and Virginia Tech. How concerning is the fact that Terry is not direct admit into the business school, unlike the other 2? My DD is a bit risk averse and is worried about not being accepted into her major. The school claims an 80% acceptance rate, but she is still skeptical. Any real life experiences with going through the process of being accepted into a major? Any personal knowledge of the strength of the career services office in helping kids find jobs/internships? Online everything is unicorns and roses so hoping for some real-life perspective. Thank you!
My DD attended Terry. She was a Foundation Fellow and got her top 2 majors (accounting and international business). Her friends got their top choices as well but they were all also Honors students. I didn’t get the sense that students with good grades had any trouble getting their top choice major.
I have no first-hand knowledge of UGA and the Terry College of Business – but when I did a quick google search it showed about a 45% acceptance rate into Terry in 2020. There seem to be additional hurdles for certain majors as well. I would do a deep dive into the acceptance rate, requirements, etc. If, in fact, the acceptance rate is about 45% you should be sure your D could be happy with a major outside of the b-school if she chooses UGA.
FWIW I am a fan of direct admit schools. When my S wanted to get a business degree, we encouraged him to focus on direct admit schools.
I believe @VirginiaBelle has a current student in Terry. Maybe they can provide more info.
As long as grades are good there should be no issue with being admitted into Terry and getting your first choice major. My son was admitted fall of sophomore year as a finance major. Finance, MIS and accounting are most competitive. They do look at your ACT/SAT test scores. I think it varies by major but excellent test scores are supposed to help for Terry. The advisors are very helpful in judging chances to admit to major. Some majors (finance and accounting but maybe others) require the accounting entrance exam. They recommend a 70 or higher on it. Highly recommend taking it immediately after finishing accounting 1 vs studying for it later.
You apply to a first and second choice major. They look at your GPA in Terry prerequisites (not overall GPA) and test scores and application essays. It is also possible to not be admitted to either one of your choices but to be placed in Econ as a major. Once you are in Terry you can reapply to another major.
You rarely hear of kids who are flat out rejected. However lower GPAs run the risk of an Econ placement - my son knows several in this boat. The 80 percent may be accurate but that has been on the website a while. Rate is lower for competitive majors. There are lots of resources to help in pre requisite classes, particularly accounting which is a weed out. As long as your child stays on top of things and takes advantage of resources (there is also an outside service called Skoolerz which provides videos, packets and one on one tutoring for multiple business courses, including accounting) they should do well.
The resources at Terry for job placement are incredible but there is no hand holding. There is a different employer every day where you can drop by and visit, there are multiple highly respected business societies you can apply for, and the career center is excellent, providing resume review, mock interviews, mentors, etc. The student has to take the initiative to take advantage of the resources though and not all do. They act as a support system but in our experience (with kids at both UGA and Georgia Tech) the internship search takes hustle. It would be overstating it at either of those schools to say that they help kids find internships - they provide the tools for a successful job search and much is dependent on the student and their level of engagement in the process.
Thank you for starting this thread! My S24 is in a similar situation considering different options and we are very interested in Terry. We will be touring UGA, Clemson, and USC this week.
Does anyone know if most Terry classes are in person and what typical class sizes are? We are still waiting to hear from UF (we are instate) and we are turned off by the high percentage of business classes that are only offered online at UF. I tried to look up courses through the UGA registrar to determine whether classes are online/in person and to see enrollment sizes, but I had trouble finding the information (probably user error).
I appreciate anyone willing to share about their experiences at Terry!
Relative just admitted. Very easy and, historically, has been easy to gain admission. Nevertheless, direct admit programs are better unless going to Georgia under Zell Miller or other generous scholarship.
Intro classes are generally in person, though there are online sections of certain classes offered for those that want online, eg, for scheduling reasons. Class sizes for regular intro classes were usually 200-300 and then smaller TA sections for those.
Thanks so much for everyone’s feedback. We will be visiting this weekend and will, hopefully, get a bit more clarity, as we will be taking a Terry tour. I think it is down to UGA and Virginia Tech at this point.
@VirginiaBelle thank you for the great Terry post! My son is a UGA freshman but changed majors from Math to Finance at orientation, so a little behind on learning about Terry.
Do you know what SAT range is acceptable to get into Terry or get the competitive majors like Finance & Accounting based on your son’s friends who were put in Econ? Do they Superscore? UGA won’t say a range or breakout by major as I know it fluctuates based on applicants year to year. His score was 1360.
Do they look at whether yo joined any business clubs? Mine hasn’t yet.
He’s doing well academically in his courses, has a 3.6 but took all gen Ed’s 1st semester, now taking Acctg2101, BUS3000, MIST2090 and ECON2106.
Feeling a little out of the loop since he was originally Math major in Liberal A&S school when applying to UGA.
Not sure. My finance son had a 35 on his ACT and a 3.7+ in Terry courses. His roommate was lower in GPA and scores. He was placed in Econ. I thought most were placed in Econ if they had respectable grades/scores but apparently this spring there were some that were denied admission. I have no idea where the cut off for scores was, and yes they superscore. They will only look at his GPA in Terry prerequisites - gen ed GPA makes no difference. For accounting and finance he will have to also take the accounting entrance exam. HIGHLY recommend he do this after his accounting 1 exam before he leaves Athens. It is 10x harder if you wait til August to take it like my son
What did you decide?
Hi! We loved UGA and Terry, but S24 also was accepted into the South Carolina Honors College and Darla Moore. Those were his top 2, and he ultimately chose USC largely because of the Honors College.
Congrats! What advantages does the honors college have? Mine got into SC but didn’t apply to Honors. He really loved Terry but hate that he’s not direct admit (or at his other top choice Wisconsin). It really adds to the stress
One of the benefits of Honors is direct admit to all majors, including International Business, but freshman also can be accepted directly into Darla Moore. Honors also offers over 300 special honors courses each semester that typically are 20 students or fewer, so he can take intro accounting, econ, etc. in small classes instead of very large lectures. Lots of the classes sound really interesting too! He will have an Honors advisor and an Honors mentor, he has guaranteed housing in the Honors dorm, and honors includes social events and special programming. They also get free printing, which didn’t sound super exciting to me, but apparently its a nice perk. He is pretty excited about it, so hopefully it will be a great fit!
Congratulations regarding U South Carolina Honors College ! (USC is closer to the ocean beaches than is UGa–which would be enough reason alone to select South Carolina.)
If your son decides to attend UGa at the last minute and has not been selected for the Honors College (top 10% of each incoming class), he can apply during his first semester as a UGa freshman if he has a 3.80 or higher GPA in at least 14 hours of UGa classes.
Does anyone know how Terry compares to Wisconsin School of Business (for recruitment, placement, ranking, whatever)? Or if it matters. My daughter is deciding between these two schools. thanks
