Hey guys,
I was looking on the Testmasters website and they have a 4point act gaurentee. I mean this is crazy. I’m looking to get a 30 on my ACT by june and then take this course over the summer. My parents are definantly willing to drop 5k for a 4point increase because a 34 will get me into any college I’ve ever wanted to attend. However, what are the chances? A 4 point increase in my score is HUGE how can they possible help me achieve this.
Thanks for the help

(yea I know I’m posting about the ACT but their 300 point increase gaurentee for the SAT is just as huge)

Such “guarantees” usually mean that if you don’t get the guaranteed score they let you take the course all over again free of charge.

Not a very attractive guarantee.

Find out the terms of this guarantee. Unless it’s a 100% money-back guarantee, I wouldn’t trust that they improve more than half of their class’s scores by that much.

yea thats the problem. If I don’t get 4 points higher I can just take the whole course again for free. But by the time I take the course again it will be to late… Do you think I could talk to one of the private tutors and ask him if he would do a money back gaurentee type thing? Also I just want to know if they fufilled their guarentee with any one on CC. It would be very helpful to know.

hey man. i’m in a PR classroom course and they have the 200 pt. guarantee from their first diagnostic test. I only scored 1980 on the diagnostic. I did poorly for sure as I wasn;t 100% focused, tired, and near the end i was bored. However, I sscore low 2100 in BB tests. So, I was about 150 pts. lower in the diagnostic. So, the 200 pt. increase doesn’t even help me much anyways (so, they’d be guaranteeing me 2180). Also, they MAKE SURE you do EVERY bit of hw to keep your guarantee.

if you score lower on the real SAT than your last diagnostic test, they allow you to take the course for a huge discount or take a refresher course for free.

What is your score at right now? I, personally, feel that the class has helped me in the following ways:
-write better essays and realize how to bump a 8ish essay to 10 and tips to get to 11.
-the diagnostics, even though not legit., help with getting accustomed to the testing environment
-my teacher (freshman at uni.) is very approachable. since other kids have 1700s and such in the class, i can always talk to him after class to ask him specific q’s about how to improve
-lots of materials to work with

Honestly though, if I learned the tips for the essay on my own (which i probs could’ve), then the course is pointless. I waste ~5 hrs. on each SAT. and SUN. for that course. That’s enough time to write a practice test, review it thoroughly, and learn from mistakes at home.

Depends if you are a very good independent worker or not, if you have motivation (which i sometimes lack, so the course is good for that), and where your scores are at.

The majority who take those classes are those who score low and want to increase it. I took the PR course, I didn’t learn anything (It was just good practice without distractions, which a studious kid can do on his own). I doubt the TestMasters will help you from a 30 to a 34. Plus, 5K is way too much for a SAT course.

You’re time and money will be better used if you work independently (or with friends) with just practice books.

I honestly think practice is the only thing that can improve your score from 30 on. Find as many practice tests as you can, take them and review your mistakes thoroughly. Generally, these big test prep courses or either for kids with low scores and a lot of room for improvement or for kids who aren’t dedicated enough to study by themselves.

Yea, I mean I’ve heard bad stuff about these courses but I have trouble studying by myself. It’s hard to concentrate when there are so many other things going on. I mean do you think it’s possible to raise my score from a 30 to a 32+ if I study for 2hrs a day during the summer>?

^2hrs. per day in the summer should be able to get you 2 pts. for sure. i haven’t prepped for the ACT, but if I did 2hrs. per day for the SAT for an entire summer, i’d expect at least 100 pt. increase (and want about 150pt. increase).

4 points is a lot on the ACT. Which one of your scores was the lowest? Unlike the SAT the ACT is not based upon the use of clever strategies or learning vocabulary. So you will have to really increase your knowledge of math or grammar to significantly raise your score.

Testmasters was awesome! I took their SAT course. Most of the basic stuff, like critical reading and math, wasnt helpful for me. but their writing and essay portion was a life saver. and for the SAT they have a 300 point score increase guarantee (my score went up 400 points). i’d say go for it if you have the cash. :)

alrighty well I’m probably going to do it. The way I look at it if I spend the money now and get into one of the schools I want I’ll reap the benefits for the rest of my life.

It is definitely worth it. Testmasters not only teaches you the information on the exam but also teaches you test strategy and time management. You can also take as many practice tests as you want up to six months after the class ends for free. Use the code PB158 to get 25$ off your class!!
