My daughter is in the middle of athletic recruiting and we’re trying to decide on additional schools/ID camps to target. She has a very strong transcript but will likely apply test-optional. Wondering if Tufts, Vassar, Haverford, Swarthmore and CMS (Claremont McKenna) are test-optional for athletic recruits? My oldest is an athlete at Johns Hopkins, and we’re very familiar with recruiting, just looking for info specifically about those schools. TIA!
Test optional for admissions, yes. But as you might already know since you’ve been through the process before, I’d guess all of the coaches will want to know her test scores during the recruiting process and the academic pre-read. They’ll also probably let her know if she should report her scores during the application process. Tufts, as a member of NESCAC, has a very well defined pre-read process. There are several very good threads in this forum dealing with high academic D3 schools.
Thank you! I’ve read a lot of posts but haven’t found my answer yet. Some schools are test-optional but not for athletic recruits, and unfortunately there’s no way to know that unless you’re already in discussions with the coach or know someone who has been through the process with that particular school. I was hoping to hear personal experiences with these specific schools.
Not only may it vary by college, it may vary by sport within the college, and by application cycle.
My daughter went through the athletic recruiting process with Tufts in 2023. She was told (by the coach) the specific minimum ACT score she needed. It was a definitive number (luckily she reached it) and test optional wasn’t mentioned, but as noted above, unclear if that was specific to her sport (field sport) and/or that coach. When my daughter wasn’t crystal clear about an academic/testing expectation, she specifically asked the coach and they were happy to provide more insight. They want the recruits they submit to pass pre-reads.
