Test score cut offs and perception?

Our daughter took the ssat twice and neither score was the homerun she was hoping for and varied quite a bit. we are unsure which to submit because the first test which was 88 percentile had >80 in all 3 subjects; 81 verbal,84 quant, and 92 reading. the 2nd test she improved her two lowest but struggled with poem passages in reading overall improved to 91 percentile, with 93 in verbal, 89 in quant but only 79 in reading… wanted to get others opinions, the 2nd test is better but the 79 i feel looks a lot worst than an 81 just the way our minds perceive the data…

should we go with the 2nd that has higher math and overall or go with the 1st that has all over 80?

These are both excellent scores. I would be worrying more about essays etc and making sure there is someone to advocate for your D (guidance counselor etc).

I’d probably go with the 91st percentile, but it really doesn’t matter. Either score is fine for any BS or day school in the US, AFAIK.

Good luck!

Why not send both? The SSAT is generally used as a screen - as in “does this score, with the rest of the package, suggest this student could do the work?”. Both answer yes.

It isn’t like the schools are building relay teams and need the 4 fastest runners or 50 highest SSAT scores. It’s more like they’re asking if the kid could run a lap around the track. From all who are fit enough for that, they build their team.

I have never considered sending more than 1 score… is this acceptable by schools? Also I kind of feel this could hurt because if you average, the 3 subjects end in the mid 80s for all 3. I think the schools like to see some 90 percentiles… She was hoping to go to Winsor, Milton, or Nobles in Boston area.

Again, your D’s scores are excellent either way. I think you’re reading way too much into this. As mentioned in another post, anything in the 80s and above in the SSAT is fine as per the Dean of Admissions of one of the “top” BSs.

If I were you, encourage your daughter to focus on the essays and completing the applications. Either of these scores is fine, and, with respect, I think you’re wasting time worrying about which to submit.
