Tetris in "Outside Activities"

On School Related and Outside Activities page, would it be completely ridiculous to put playing Tetris as one of my outside activities? I mean, I could put surgical internship, congressional internship or blah blah blah, but playing tetris is something that I really like to do.

I’m not a world champion or anything. In fact, I can barely go past level 36, but it’s one of those obscure things i just like.

The internships sound a lot more impressive, lol. Tetris won’t add anything but a little humor to your application (at least the way I see it)

I think it seems like something you would in your interest section, but nice try! lol It would certainly serve to make you unique, but I’m not sure how the admissions committee would receive it.

as strange as that sounds, it might not be such a bad addition to your app, assuming you don’t have tons of glaring eccentricities that make you look like a nut, haha. for my “shows, exhibits, etc” section I mentioned a couple of special exhibits at the Met, some independent films I had seen, and, maybe analogous to your tetris, the time I saw Modest Mouse in Philadelphia. sure, it probably wasn’t THE factor in my acceptance, but obviously it didn’t bar me from admission. use your best judgment and view it in the context of the rest of your app. I personally kind of like the idea.
and, anyway, you do really like tetris. doesn’t honesty mean anything anymore??

To tell you the truth, I do have a surgical internship, a congressional internship and a research internship needing a spot. But I figured that I can write about some of it in the “what did you do 2 summers ago” slot. One is for internship class, so it can be school-related activity. On the Outside Activities blank, it asks Interest/Activity, and I learned I don’t have that much passion for research so it would definitely not be my interest.

For my “shows and films” I put the Big Bang Theory and Saturday Night Live. Maybe I am just a weirdo.

I never thought Tetris would add anything to my application, but I want to know if it would hurt me in any way. Thanks!

As an old guy who spent the evening drinking beers and playing shuffleboard, Ms. PacMan and pinball with a bunch of young professionals, I endorse the Tetris reference. Remember that the admissions people are real people who probably spend a lot of time trying to distinguish the pedantic and disingenuous drivel from the honest and heartfelt autobiographic tidbits. Let them know who you really are!

do you guys know utada hikaru? japanese pop singer, who coincidently also went to columbia for a while? she is a beast at tetris. search “utada hikaru tetris” on youtube
