Yes. Ready! Got water and other beverages, bread, eggs, snacks, etc. Making the children do all their laundry and the dishes early in case the power goes off. They are comparing the rain to Tropical Storm Allison which was a double hit to the Houston area in 2001, flooded downtown and ruin numerous long-term research projects that were in the basement areas in the Texas Medical Center. Twenty-two people died then, so we are not playing.
My area has never flooded but it becomes difficult to get more than a mile out of the area. Our office never shuts but we have a full shut down set for Monday, with Tuesday as a possible. I can’t imagine that things will be OK by Tuesday. 4-inches of rain is enough to keep the Metro Train from running.
My area floods - we haven’t … yet … but it’s been close. With that in mind, I’ve moved some furniture upstairs, rolled up rugs, items off bottom shelves.
We’re working the laundry and dishwasher … recharging cell phones, etc. … in anticipation of no power.
May I add that I really really am not looking forward to the next few days (week? or longer?). We had no power for eleven days when Ike came through.
Hard to tell how ready we need to be. We’re either too much or not enough, I think.
To everyone in the path, be safe.
I wonder what anyone can do against 36" rain.
Build an ark.
Evacuate?
TAMU-Corpus Christi is on an island connected to the main land by a causeway. They promote themselves as the “island university”.

I guess there will be a long delay in starting the fall semester.
Move belongings to a second floor or attic? Stock food and water so that you won’t need to move through flooded streets? Charge all your electronics (and external batteries)?
Three or four FEET of rain? Wow. There is nowhere for the water to go, when a flat area gets rain amounts measured in feet. Plus the floodwater is going to be full of petrochemicals as well as the usual sewage and debris. Doesn’t sound like a place I’d want to remain in.
I hope everyone stays safe, whether they choose to go or stay.
Stay safe everyone. I remember when we got ~36" of snow in one storm a few years ago. Nobody could get anywhere til the streets were cleared, but that’s nothing compared to that amount in rain. At least we didn’t have to deal with flooding.
I of course know that this is very serious and I hope everyone stays safe but… there’s a picture post on reddit called “People at the store in Houston would rather starve during Hurricane Harvey than eat chicken and waffle Lay’s”
I sent it to a close friend who is not in the evacuation zone but still in danger and she goes “Look, we might lose everything- including our lives- but we have standards!”
She thinks this is going to be bad. She’s from Houston (not where she is now) and thinks a lot of the people she knows there aren’t taking this seriously enough. I know she’s really worried behind the joking.
I just got back from HEB (local Texas grocery) and you’d think it was the end of time! They had all the check out lanes open and pulled thier office workers to help bag and the lines were still down every isle. It was really hard to shop with people lined up in the isles to check out. We are far inland just SW of Austin, can’t imagen what it must be like near Houston. We haven’t got any rain yet but it’s very cloudy.
Edit: spoke too soon first band just hit it raining sideways, hard and fast!
We got our generator started up. Stocked up on non perishable items, put away anything that may blow away. Our neighborhood wasn’t here during Allison but we are the highest lot in our neighborhood. Still way too close to a creek for 36" of rain. Will move things upstairs if water rises too much. Already had one tornado warning. Will fill the tubs with water tonight.
Harvey’s now Cat 3. Sustained winds of 120+ mph. NWS predicts lots of catastrophic and life-threatening flooding in normally dry areas.
Watching Texas from California. Hoping it doesn’t go as a badly as the forecast predicts. The DFW area is not expected to be impacted, so I’m not worried about my house. I am worried about my fellow Texans, though. Stay safe.
I am in San Antonio and we are ready for a weekend of heavy rain–expecting 10 inches or so, nothing like Houston. We have enough food and water to make it until Monday as they are advising that people stay off the roads. There are evacuation centers that opened last night and are hosting folks from the coast.
My DS18 was scheduled to take the SAT tomorrow but it was rescheduled to 9/16. He is thrilled to have extra time to prepare.
Stay safe everyone.
Up to 20" in Houston. I’ve never seen that much rain in my life.
5-6" of rain in a short period of time can be devastating. 30+ inches? Very, very scary.
