Texas A&M Class of 2028 Official Thread

@52AG82 curious on your Map to Mays comment

My son has been accepted directly into Economics and wants to try the first year on transferring internal over to Mays.

I spoke with a Mays advisor and they commented as long as he completes the 30 ATM hours with a 3.5 GPA plus completing the two Math classes, there wouldn’t be an issue.

Thanks for your input!

I’ll let @Christi1993 share about attending to change majors to Mays

Mays allows extremely limited transfers into the business program, something like 100 students per semester or per year.

Also, Island Day is this Saturday (Feb. 3) at TAMU-Corpus Christi. You can tour the campus and dorms/apartments and learn more about life on the island. Go to the TAMUCC website to sign up.

Yes, @AggieDad1996 this is correct, from @DTxAggie

To change majors into Mays, the Map To Mays states 3.5 and 30 hours. That is right. BUT, what the Mays person didn’t tell you was, only 100 admits into Mays a YEAR, extremely competitive!
Unless student has a 3.9-4.0, they won’t stand a chance. There will be PLENTY of 4.0 students applying, and they’re going to take the applicants with the highest gpa/most qualified.

@FriscoDad said it best… “students should always aim for a 4.0 to succeed in college” (this is especially true at TAMU!)

Does the 100 Mays admit apply to Blinn team transfers or also current change of major transfers?

Based on the conversation with the Mays advisor, I understood the 100 cap for Blinn team transfers and not for current students changing majors.

Thanks for your clarifications!

@AggieDad1996 Blinn TEAM students have their own pathway agreement and requirements-

I don’t know if there is a specific number of Blinn Team admits for Mays, but for non-Blinn team change of majors they only take 100 and 3.5 is the minimum to apply. You will be competing against everyone else at A&M who wants to transfer to Mays. To have the best shot of transitioning in to Mays you need a 3.9-4.0.

My son is also ready for Tech as backup. He’s been offered scholarship, picked his dorm etc… seamless. I am beginning to question TAMU processes. I have a friend whose stepson dropped out of A&M Eng. and she told me he always got poor advising information, could never get classes just horrible things Maybe if A&M could get all the 5-7 year Seniors graduated they could make room for freshman!!!

@AggieDad1996 approximately 100 internal change of majors a year; Blinn TEAM doesn’t fall into that mix, as they have their own pathway agreement.

@FriscoDad posted an eye opening stat not that long ago, about how many Blinn TEAM started out wanting Mays, and how many were successful…it was a pretty small %…a pathway agreement is great, BUT maintaining overall 3.8 in Blinn classes, A&M classes and total gpa can be tough (especially because many Blinn classes are accelerated 8 week timeline, not a full semester).

What everyone is saying is true but it’s also doable. My son changed major after sophomore fall semester from Econ to Mays. He waited til he had the 30 plus hours and all the prereq courses taken plus enrolled in the Accounting 229 class at blinn for the spring to get that done as well. He had a 3.83 and all As in the required courses except a B in Math 142. He applied on Jan. 2nd and accepted Jan. 3rd. We were shocked. His major immediately changed to business. We thought it would be for the fall his junior year, but nope… right away.

He ended up with a minor in Econ and he lost zero credits by changing his major because we worked his degree plan side by side the econ plan. So if he had been denied, he was still on the right path. He graduated with only 123 hours and was able to get that $1000 refund for doing so.

If y’all don’t know about the $1k incentive to graduate with no more than 123 hours, please look it up. Pretty cool deal.

Likely because you seem well versed in the way A&M works. Think about parents who are clueless and students who are given rookie advisors. I have worked at a UT system school and have worked for various schools assisting virtual students. All this jargon and lingo beats all I’ve ever seen. TEAB TEAM PSA PTA ETAM… YMCA… (insert sarcasm for those who have no humor) I mean sheesh! I could care less about Eng. my child is in review still for MAYS and has all the buttons. It’s full, so go ahead and send the PSA offer for crying out loud. Not to mention his name in directory is under lastname, lastname not that it matters but no one will fix it. I feel for the AO as 70,000 applicants is overwhelming. They just need a revamped process. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

It took exactly a week for my older son to receive his acceptance after selecting TEAB last year. I remember TEAM offers taking a bit longer, up to 2 weeks, to hear back. As long as you submit your choice within a few days of receiving the offer, you are in. I don’t remember anyone in the same boat getting rejected last year.

I’m always happy to help on the side. I help a lot of students transition/transfer/change major etc etc. It’s my passion. 100 plus students and it’s not a job for me, so free of charge.

That IS a passion project. Thanks for doing that for those kids and families… It’s hard work.

We are going to go down this route as well! What dorm do you suggest for freshman boy at Tech? We are just starting to look now at the options.

I just looked at what was open the other day and Honors dorm is still open. It would be worth applying for honors program just for the dorm! There are a lot of youtube videos we looked at too. My son got Murray bc we got housing with the first group. I read you can go ahead and grab what’s there now and things will open up in May when kids plan’s change. My son is a great example- he is truly undecided right now and may drop that dorm.

I am with you. This process has given my son so much anxiety, not to mention what it has done for his confidence level. He has worked hard, and to feel it still isn’t good enough is a huge let down. We have back up options like Tech that will be just fine. Where I went to school has never entered into my career opportunities, but then I am not a native Texan ( went to school in Hawaii ) so maybe times are different but TAMU needs a better process or certain.

The only dorms left at Tech are Traditional and Honors. Traditional is not so great, but they can move after 1st semester if there is room.

I totally get everyone’s frustration/anxiousness but to say there needs to be a better process, I’m not sure that’s even possible. TAMU receives 55k plus applications a cycle. The deadline is Dec. 1st. Most students find out their decision by end of January to mid Feb. That’s less than 2 months from deadline to decision. NOW for those that apply really early (which is great), the wait seems excruciatingly long. But TAMU gives a ton of decisions prior to deadline (auto and holistic, although less holistic), not to mention they then offer options to those bubble students so they are in the drivers seat or at least have some say on the path they take in this journey. THEN you have other options like Galveston/PTA that you choose or PSA where they give you another guaranteed pathway from satellite school.

I know the wait is hard… I’ve been there and done that 2.5 times (PSA to transfer and full admit). I get it, but to say the process is flawed doesn’t sit well with me. The competition is fierce. IT only gets tougher in college. Stay positive for your students. It’ll only make things better in the end. It always works out… always.
