I would definitely be interested in a group chat! Don’t know how to PM you?
I have a kid that is a sophomore in mays right now… Based on my viewpoint, I would say the weed is a ton less prevalent than most college campuses… I would say there’s more kids going to Bible study than there are smoking weed…… my kid has only had one online class in his two years and it was the Econ class… He absolutely loves it loves the professors and was able to be a teachers assistant for business 101 this year… I cannot think of a better place to have sent my kid
I have a freshman kid living on campus and she HATES the smell of weed so if it was around her dorm a lot, I would have heard about it. Callaway House is not on-campus, so don’t compare apples to oranges.
I mean, you can do both…
But I digress…
@crn46 congrats on Mays!
Weed is everywhere! Every school. No avoiding it.
If the RA in dorm finds out or sees it, there are for sure consequences. You won’t find a school w/o weed. I wouldn’t say it is constant or prevalent in the dorms, more in certain off campus places.
Mays is awesome! ECON is NOT a Mays class, just a required class for Mays. The freshman ECON classes are always online, no getting around that.
Mays classes aren’t that difficult to get into, as it’s a ‘small’ major (compared to many). Mays advisors will suggest only taking 12-13 hours fall of freshman year. Mays advisors are great!
Have you joined Aggie Moms/Dads of Mays page?
Parents only, must answer all questions to join.
Great, drama free page just for admitted to Mays parents!
This is great information, thank you all!! It is reassuring as well. I am not on Facebook nor is anyone in the household so I haven’t joined the Mays group but I am strongly considering getting an account just to join. Thanks again everyone and good luck to those still waiting on decisions!
Thank you for this! My son and husband went to mass at St Mary’s when they toured the campus and they were both very impressed! They just showed up to the Catholic Center and a very friendly student welcomed them and gave them a tour of the facility and told them about the community. It was great and my son really liked it!
@crn46 oh, you will definitely need to be on Facebook (and I’d suggest Instagram, too), if you’ve got a kid at A&M…especially if you’re OOS.
You’ll just miss out on a TON.
The Mays page highlights Mays orgs & activities, upcoming events, ways to get involved, etc. Parents ask Mays specific questions, there’s lots of info on study abroad programs. Things you would never know otherwise.
There are 2 main FB pages for Aggie moms/dads. I would only recommend this one (not Aggie Parents-WAY too much drama, helicopter admins). Just make sure to answer ALL questions for each page.
FOR SURE you need to join before dorm selection! You’ll learn the in’s & outs of the process.
My son started as Econ major and during the NSC they told us the reason it is online is because when it was taught by many profs in person (like English or math) the knowledge got lost so when the students progressed, the head Econ profs didn’t feel the students were ready. So now it’s written and taught the same way for every student by the same 2 profs who wrote the program. They found huge success over the years that this has increased readiness and base knowledge.
Having a daughter, niece, and nephew all at TAMU as Freshmen right now, I’d say that the weed problem at A&M is probably much, much, much less than it is at almost every other major public university. A&M is pretty tame compared to many other colleges. (Heavy drinking, but lighter on drugs.) And in the on-campus dorms, smoking of any kind is rare (vaping and gummies less rare, but those don’t smell if the smell is his primary concern). My daughter’s friends at Georgia, SMU, UT, Colorado, all the CA schools, etc. are all experiencing a lot more prevalent drug scene than she is at TAMU.
And agree - lots of kids are active in their churches at A&M or otherwise pretty straight, so if your kid isn’t into the partying scene - he is likely to find a nice group of like-minded friends.
On the other hand - if he wants to find vices, he can do that anywhere.
I don’t think it is prevelant on campus. I’ve visited campus and my daughter’s dorm multiple times in the past 1.5 years and never smelled it. I’ve even stayed overnight in her dorm once. The vibe on campus is not party like. I’m sure some students partake but I wouldn’t say it was prevalent or a problem. And I think things like edibles are more available so even if they are partaking they aren’t stinking up the place!
Hello! I am wondering if there are any c/o 2028 pages for Gateway this summer? OOS and would like to link son up with potential classmates/roommates for the summer if he chooses to accept his offer.
Thanks.
If my daughter is accepted to TEAM…. How hard is it to get a seat in the intro bio/math courses at Blinn?
She’ll be fine… may be a M/W/F 8:00am class but she should be able to get these courses.
There is also the Aggie Parents page on Facebook. I’ve been part of that group since 2020 when my Aggie daughter decided to attend TAMU. It’s a great page with a wide range of topics. However, be aware that students are not allowed to join.
We drove up to CS from Houston today to look at apartments. We saw Park West, Calloway House and Calloway Villas. Yes, I know ya’ll warned me on the Calloway “animal house”, but my son wanted to see them… HA!!!
The Park West was really nice and HUGE! Great location to campus, very new, busses running every 5 minutes and walking distance to a grocery store. They are at around 95% full, and if you want to live there, you’d be placed with other roommates at this point.
Next we saw Calloway House which felt the most like a dorm to me. Mainly Freshman, nice rooms, and the biggest bonus being the in-house kitchen. I don’t know if my son gets how nice that would be since I WON’T be cooking for him next year I didn’t smell any weed and the students we saw seemed very nice. They were booked a little over 50% but certain floor plans were already gone. It was the most expensive by far, but also included the meal plan.
The last place was Calloway Villas across the street, and this ended up being my son’s favorite. It was nicer and newer than Calloway House, and he said it just felt homier. The Villas did not have a cafeteria, but you could pay to use the one at Calloway House. We may end up doing this or doing Dining Dollars on campus. I am still not sure what the best food option will be? They were at 45% capacity, so he and a friend could pick out rooms together. They have a roommate matching app they were very proud of that sounded like Match.com… it sounded great to help match incoming students who did not have a roommate. The Villas had more students of all ages, not just Freshman.
I hope this helps those who are in the same boat, and looking for options outside the dorm. If you are considering Park West, I wouldn’t sit on that one much longer. Overall, my son seemed reassured that he had good choices!
Hey y’all, I just got my PSA offer. When I applied, I chose my first choice to be business than second choice, communications. I’m not sure what I really want to do because business isn’t offered through PSA but I know communications is which communications is still good. I have heard changing majors isn’t really good if I’m doing PSA. I just applied to TAMU Galveston for maritime business and it’s almost the same classes my first year if I’m majoring in business. Would it be easier if I went to Galveston my first year then transfer to college station because TAMUG is a TAMU school not a sister. Mays is competitive to transfer into since they accept 100 transfer students and need to maintain a 3.75 gpa. Should I take the PSA Communications route or Maritime business TAMUG route and then going to TAMU College Station?
Thanks for letting us know. I’ll check prices for Calloway Villas. I didn’t know they were less. The waiting is harder since we’re watching housing options disappear!
Thanks for the info! I’d love to not sit on Park West for much longer, but our friends at the AO are not helping…
@Christi1993 can weigh in on this…
