Makes complete sense. Using that same logic, is that why we see some “score anomalies” getting in earlier through holistic review? Picking a program that is somewhat unique to TAMU along with ECs or volunteering that aligns with success in that program (and an essay that stresses those points)? I would think they’d value someone that clearly wants that major over someone who may choose it as a backup to engineering if retention is the goal. Hard to observe here since most of the discussion and stats revolve around the majors with limited space.
Not quite sure what you meant by “score anomalies”.
TAMU don’t publish holistic-only data, but holistic actually has higher median scores than auto-admit. At this time, admission usually roll out to the auto-admit as there is no choice. Then will be the high score applicants. All Mays decision usually done before winter break. Engineering review is focused on course vigor for admitted students. Moderate scores holistic applicants mostly get their decisions between January and March.
Sorry, by score anomalies I meant the occasional 1200/1300 scores hearing in Oct/Nov/Dec.
I see. In reality, unless they are sport recruits. home-school or auto-admit, this has never happened.
There were quite a few claimed they got admitted in social media, but in reality, most of the low scores were auto-admit. 1200 to 1300 are borderline qualified for Team (but Team decision has never been before winter break). It seemed to be hard to verify who was telling the truth. It could be peer pressure in high school. A student with low rank and score could have claimed admitted but nobody would be able to verify until one really enrolled. (Note that even PSA could have Howdy access). The truth is, TAMU has never admitted any holistic with moderate or low score that early. That’s from someone with inside data access.
Set aside the he-said-she-said rumors, parents need to teach students to be practical when planning for college. All Texas public colleges are required to provide CDS (common data set), TAMU and UT system have published data. Auto-admit will be good reward for 4 years of hard work, for holistic, it is best to aim for top 25% scores median. Apply back up schools with the majors align properly with academic performance and interest.
Thank you
Mays fills up quickly in the fall around October/november. Therefore high score first quarter along with auto get the nod. Engineering is another beast and those applicants may not get their decision with options til January/February.
Mays isn’t “competitive” based on merit for Mays, just popular. Yes there are some that may have a unique application that gets into Mays with a 2q And test optional but that is soooo rare. In 8 years I’ve only had 2 verirdied that this happened to. And that’s been a few years ago since the 2nd one so…
… manage expectations and know that it will work out.
Great info. We’re actually aiming for College of Ag (ECCB), and I can’t find much here on their timelines, stats, etc. so feel like we’re flying a little blind lol.
Does anyone have an official update on when engineering will begin sending out acceptances? Some say October and others say much later because the early deadline was removed.
Thanks!!
I just noticed my daughter our kinesiology as both her 1st and 2nd choice major. Is that going to hurt hrr?
She chose the same major or just the same college? If same major, then yes, choose a different 2nd choice. If within same college, then that’s totally fine. Remember, they accept to tamu. once accepted, then it’s just a matter of finding a major with open spots.
I don’t know anything as far as when they’ll start admitting. Even though they did away with the Oct. 15th deadline, I’m going to assume they’ll stick closely to that timeframe of rolling out decisions. Many students before this year were deferred til later even though their apps were in before the deadline.
Again, they’re admitted to TAMU first. the dept/major doesn’t matter. Once accepted, they’ll see if their first choice major has room for them. If not, they’ll move to 2nd choice. It’s too early to go past that.
Last year my son got his Engineering acceptance on Oct. 2nd. He was auto-admit to the university and applied on Aug. 1st. But like @Christi1993 said, the Oct. 15th deadline is gone so who knows how roll out will be this year.
My child has received her admission to her major (YAY) and indicated an interest in the Honors Academy and filled out the form but hasn’t heard anything else. Has any other admitted students seen anything in their portal? Not sure what the process is at this point.
She chose kinesiology as 1st and 2nd choice. I just noticed it last night. Is it too late for her to change one of the majors since she has already applied? I’m not even sure how she is able to change it. Please advise. Thank you! She will be holistic review since she is not top 10%.
I believe you change it on AIS. It’s a drop down menu where it lists her 2 major choices. If that’s not it, and if no one else knows, then definitely call the admissions office to ask.
you never want to have 1st and 2nd choice the same. If engineering, then that’s okay and very common.
My son put Electrical Engineering as #1, and Business as #2. Is it better to put Mechanical Engineering as #2? He is NMSF. Thanks.
It’s best to put what major he truly wants since he will get his first choice major assuming he’s already applied.
My DD did the same thing for first and second choice in Kinesiology based upon the different tracks and concentrations. From what I can gather online, the track and concentration can be chosen post-admission. I am also wondering if choice two needs to be changed to something in another department or college? Perhaps something less competitive, but also less relevant to what she wants to pursue?
You mean less popular? Pick a 2nd choice that fits into their career choice plans.
