Last time! One more kid to get in!
Always thankful for the help and experiences I find here!
Hard to believe it’s that time! I’ve followed along with the class that just applied, and the info was super helpful. But I know I’ll have more questions as it gets real for us!
It’s definitely a trying time for holistic applicants. Happy to help when we can.
Woohoo! The thread’s open. Here for a second kid hoping to be an Aggie. I’m eager to see when they post the SAT cutoff for auto admit for homeschoolers this year. Thinking it can’t possibly be as low as last year.
Welcome back into the chaos. I’m curious to see that as well. It was ridiculously low last year (IMO).
Another homeschooler here awaiting the update for the new test scores for TOP 10 this year.
I’d like to get some thoughts on my son’s upcoming application to the A&M College of Engineering in August 2026. Both his parents graduated from A&M and he was brought up as an Aggie. He’s all in and A&M is his first choice. He’s also applying to Michigan, Georgia Tech, Florida, Georgia, Bama and Auburn. But his #1 is A&M. I understand that getting into A&M is not as easy as it was for those of us in the 90s, but I understand that the College of Engineering is exceptionally difficult. He is finishing his Junior year at a small Christian private school in North Texas. He will not be in the top 10% of his class, which class size is around 55 students. He’ll prob be 6th or around that. He takes all honors and AP classes as well as some dual credit, has a GPA of 4.6, Summa Cum Laude. Got a 1420 SAT (1440 superscore) and 35 on ACT. Counselor at his school told him getting in without being top 10% is going to be challenging. He would prefer not going Blinn team, which I do understand is a solid option but I digress. Just trying to get an idea if A&M is a solid option, or should we start planning on other options. Thanks for any help. - Gig 'Em Dave '97
Howdy Dave! I can tell you he has a fantastic shot at getting full admit to TAMU with the scores and ranking. This is assuming he has taken or will take high level math.
Yes the top 10% is the goal, but many get into engineering as holistic candidates. Be sure to have his app stuff ready to submit early. Do not wait (no matter what you hear, it matters).
Also have ECs, leadership roles and all the extra things spelled out. Some like to wait til app time to get stuff together. It takes longer than you thinks. Also have essay written and reviewed.
Best of luck and come back with any and all questions.
I need some guidance regarding a potential school change for my daughter’s senior year due to ongoing health concerns, and what impact that might have on her chances of admission to Texas A&M.
She currently has a 3.96 unweighted GPA at a private school that does not rank. However, she has been dealing with health complications that we believe are related to mold exposure at the school (we have a well-documented history of similar issues in other environments). As a result, we are strongly considering withdrawing her at the end of this year and transitioning to a homeschool program—most likely through UT High School—for her senior year.
Our question is what we should realistically expect in terms of how this change might affect her chances of admission for Fall 2027 (or possibly Spring 2027 if she is able to graduate early).
Her health will ultimately drive our decision, regardless of admissions implications, but we would appreciate any insight you can provide so we can plan accordingly.
Sorry to hear about her health, and glad you are taking care of it plus asking great questions on how it will affect her application.
With only knowing her gpa, it is hard to know her chances even under normal graduation scenario.
Tamu looks at gpa/rank and extracurriculars through the end of Junior year. Her test score will play a big part in their decision. As long as she takes courses that challenge and satisfy grad requirements, i don’t feel like she will be negatively impacted.
Could also be a good essay topic.
Thank you for the insight, we are hopeful but realistic. Great idea on the essay. I look forward to participating in the forum as we work through this process.
Same for me too! One in, one to go! ![]()
Of course, as you said, you need to make the best decision for your daughter’s health. Does she have a sat/act score? If you go that route, I don’t think there’s a disadvantage to applying as a homeschooler to Texas A&M. Homeschools are considered private schools by the state, and you could argue homeschoolers that are good test takers have an advantage with the new bill requiring universities to assign students rank based on test scores. (Last year the cutoff was 1290 SAT for automatic admission) I don’t know if the school will evaluate her file as a private schooler or a homeschooler because they look at transcript through the end of 11th grade, but there are plenty of students who are admitted that come from homeschool or private school.
