I am a high school senior and I have gotten accepted into Stony Brook and Texas A&M University.
I plan on majoring in math and according to most rankings Stony Brook is ranked 20 and A&M is ranked in the fifties in their math programs. This makes me think that Stony Brook has a strong math program. My only concern is that A&M is ranked higher than Stony Brook overall. Which one will get me to an ivy league grad school? I want to attend a university, from which I can have the greatest chance to continue studying math at top universities in grad school. So which university should I attend?

Frankly, both are outstanding programs and schools. Texas A & M is a HUGE school, but its got as much school spirit as Notre Dame. Its a SPORTS MECCA. Better weather. Stony Brook is on upper Long Island, isolated and the facilities may not be as nice. Depends on where you live, what you want and what really matters to you.

Either one will serve you will with respect to grad school IF you get good grades and do well on your graduate school admission tests. Have you visited A&M? It is a very unique culture and somewhat conservative. It can be a shock to someone from the northeast.

Both of them have outstanding math programs. For grad school, research experience is paramount, so you might want to inquire about the possibilities on that front.

I’d go to A&M since there is lots of research going on and it has a better rank.
