My dd just finished her Freshman Year! She did pretty well.

So, Texas has a weird way of calculating the GPA. I won’t get her class rank until August.

It is block scheduling, so 4 classes per semester.
2 grades per class per semester.
They list the grades as %, not A, B, etc…every point counts.
The ap classes are weighted as 5.0 and the other classes are 4.0 weighted.

I am trying to see if I can calculate myself. So does anyone have any insight?
Thanks

percentage times weight (5.0 or 4.0) = class grade.
Add all the class grades and divide by number of classes.
That would be a weighted GPA. Do them all on the 4. scale for unweighted GPA.
Another way is to assign each class a whole grade, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, based on A, B, C, etc. A = 4 or 5 depending on weighting, B = 3 or 4, etc. You need to know where a B starts at your school. Traditionally in Texas was 90-100 = A, 80 - 89 = B, etc, but not all schools adhere to that. Total up the whole grade points and divide by the number of classes.

No 5.0 weighted this 3rd & 4th semester. So I add up %ages and then mutiply by 4.
So 1468+1460=2928 divided by 4…OK…this isn’t right…I come up with 732
So what am I doing wrong?

Last semester…added & mutiplied gives you 1468

Band (100)
Spanish 2 (90)
Eng 1 (93)
Alg 1 (84)

Final semester…added & mutiplied gives you 1460

Band (100)
Spanish 2 (90)
Eng 1 (93)
Alg 1 (82)

4.0 * 100% (1.00) = 4.0

This probably isn’t right. Most likely 90% - 100% = 4.0 (or 5.0) weighted.

So, 4+4+4+3 = 15/4 = 3.75 first semester
4+4+4+3 = 3.75 second semerster

Colleges may well throw out the band marks.

This is how my Texas high school calculated its GPA for class rank purposes. It was on a 5.0 scale (1 pt boost for AP or Honors) based on percentages. I have never heard of another district using this scale, though.

a 100 avg (unweighted) would be a 5.0, which is equal to a 90 avg in weighted classes.

Band (100) - 5.0
Spanish 2 (90) - 4.0
Eng 1 (93) - 4.3
Alg 1 (84) - 3.4

Band (100) - 5.0
Spanish 2 (90) - 4.0
Eng 1 (93) - 4.3
Alg 1 (82) - 3.2

From this scale, her GPA would be 4.15. For comparison, the val at my high school had a 5.5 and the top 10% cutoff was around 4.8.

Information on calculating class rank should be in the student handbook for your child’s school. Calculating class rank can vary by school or school district. There is not any one “standard” method for all schools in Texas.

I just want to say thanks for helping me.
Found the info it was in the course guide! (duh, former freshman mom…I was looking on their website)
So…

“All grades earned in the 4 areas of English, Math, Science & Social Studies will be used to determine class rank & GPA. (Outside of these four areas, no courses will carry a difficulty level, nor will they be used to determine rank/gpa.)
Grades are weighted according to the assigned levels as follows…
level 1 is 1.2, level 2 is 1.1, level 3 is 1.0.
These weights are referred to as Course Grade Multiplier.
The computed score is then totaled and divided by the number of courses taken (averaged) in these four areas. These averages will be placed in numerical order from highest to lowest. The highest avergae shall be number 1 in class.
For entering Freshman, all grades earned in English, Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language, any AP Course, will be used to determine class rank/gpa.”

So that means…ugh…throw out band, right?
1st semeter

Span 2 90 * 1.1 =99
Eng 1 93 * 1.1 = 102.3
Alg 1 84 * 1.1 = 92.4

2nd semester
Span 2 90 * 1.1= 99
Eng 1 93 * 1.1= 102.3
Alg 1 82* 1.1 = 90.2

So now what???

If you have come this far, here is her first block grades…

1 semester

Geo 1 91 1.1=100.1
Span 1 90 1.1= 99
P/AP Bio 87 * 1.2=104.4

2nd semester

Geo 1 91 * 1.1= 100.1
Span 1 90 * 1.1= 100.1
P/AP Bio 99 * 1.2 = 118.8

Whoa nelly…big difference with the PreAP class…

So I add them together and divide by what?

divide by the 6 classes used in the total. They have a very generous grading system, but then everyone gets the same boost and adcoms will re-average it anyway.
