Per MOWC. I also believe that Texas State is starting to benefit from the lockout of highly qualified students from UT Austin from competitive suburban High Schools, but that is my pet peeve.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, limbwalker, but since you are Catholic, you may want to consider the University of Dallas.

TSU does indeed have a very good marching band. I’ve seen them perform and really enjoyed it. They also offer marching band scholarships, just FYI…

My impressions of this thread – things got off on the wrong foot in LW’s earlier thread where he had the unmitigated gall to refer to his own daughter as “really smart.” Understand, this is not a quantified measurement; it is his assessment as a proud dad. He didn’t say she was the smartest kid in the world, he didn’t say she was smarter than everyone on CC, he just said that she was “really smart.” Well, somebody, I can’t remember who, took it upon themselves to admonish him against this characterization. Good grief. Who cares? I don’t see the point of that. It didn’t seem like they were joking. Maybe they meant well, I don’t know. It didn’t come across well to me. When a parent comes on here and talks about their kid being really nice, or really sensitive, or really caring nobody comes on and says, “Oh, they aren’t really that sensitive compared to the norm here on CC.”

Then, he started another thread, where, remarkably, everyone was now telling him his daughter was too smart for the schools that she liked. I think there were some good suggestions. But from what I read, I think he knows that there are other schools, and in fact I think he said he has tried to talk his daughter into considering them. It’s possible she doesn’t want to. Well, maybe LW got a little too defensive and carried it into his TSU thread, but I can’t honestly say I would have behaved much differently.

I read all the way through last night --because I really hadn’t figured out all the players yet-- and here is my recap: OP posts daughter has scholarship at TSU; he’s “not looking a gift horse in the mouth” but thinks she “could have done better.” Others, including MOWC, respond with hearty congratulations. Within a few posts OP sticks foot in mouth (perhaps inadvertently) by slamming an excellent college that several posters’ children attended. They react. IMHO understandable and justified. Then it all takes off. Some assure OP his daughter could do better. Others assure OP his daughter doesn’t need to do better. Some actually post about TSU. OP assures us TSU is either good enough or better than good enough (this I’m not clear on.) Discussion of various other good enough or better than good enough schools by various posters. Discussion of schools to which OP wanted his daughter to apply. But she wouldn’t but now she might. Some of them may or may not still have merit money available. Discussion of visit to TSU and Austin. (I will point out discussion of visit to Austin may technically be OT) I would not have posted today if this had stayed on page 2 but since it didn’t will just add: I am anxiously awaiting today’s visit report. Who thinks there is any possibility UT is still in the running? I hope they both are having a great day!

I am hoping to someday visit the outlet mall mentioned on the first page.

alh,
To take this TOTALLY OT (and make it even more contentious!!), don’t bother with the outlet mall. It’s not that great. Terrible traffic and the stuff, except for a couple of names (Gucci, Prada) is just meh.
Ok, back to college wars. :)

Okay, now I’m REALLY mad!!! It’s not the right fit for everyone, but some of us idiots really enjoy it.

Just kidding.

^^sounds like it might be stuffy and full of trust fund kids ;)

(also jk)

It does have a Nike store- and a Coach. I want to cram this mall down everyone’s throat!

I feel like I have to prove that I DO know something about this outlet mall (but then let’s discuss the Green Hills Mall here in TN). We had the mis-fortune to go to San Marcos outlets the 2nd day the place opened many, many summers ago on our way back from South Padre. I think it was the hottest day ever recorded on earth. Every person in Texas was there and my kids were young and cranky. It was lovely…not.

at the risk of sounding elitist I’d like to add the name of a couple of small boutiques to the discussion

because I do really like malls, too, but maybe they just aren’t for everyone. I can see both sides here.

We were actually there for some August tax free weekends and no, THOSE were the hottest days recorded on Earth and I’m sure that WE were much more miserable than you were MOWC.

At any rate, it kills my D that they have a Betsy Johnson outlet and none of our local outlet malls do. Besty is a good fit for my D, but without some merit aid, we just can’t send my D to her store.

I can’t make a decision without seeing the Outlet Mall’s Common Data Set.

How many people looked vs. buying? What was the average purchase amount? What was the retention rate - you know, how many returned and shopped again and again?

;)

I believe the flagship Betsy Johnson store in NYC is still accepting shoppers. Maybe someone else can tell you if the scholarship dealine has passed. If your daughter has her heart set on Betsy Johnson, and you are sure it is because of the fit and NOT because of the label… I really don’t see how you can justify ignoring the flagship.

I’m too special for the outlet mall. I like to go to the “prestigious” stores in the “real” malls. (Thank goodness ground has been broken for the first Nordstrom in our state…opens 2011)

I am still on about boutiques, the ones that change lives. I am not sure Betsy Johnson qualifies. MHO

I’d add to this discussion, but personally I’m still miffed that posters disparaged Houston several pages back. I am now ignoring most everybody. :)

Can we please just have a discussion about the San Marcos mall? For instance, can any one tell me about the Johnny Rockets burgers?

I drove by the outlet mall this week and refused to get out of the car. Seriously.

I think the burgers are better at Five Guys. Why would you go to Johnny Rockets? You are too good for that.
Besides, Johnny Rockets is inner city.

I know someone who started out shopping at the San Marcos mall, and then moved on to shop on Rodeo Drive. He’s now a personal shopper at a major boutique on 5th Ave. in Manhattan.
