<p>hey everyone, i’m male, indian, from texas…wanna find out how i stand…here is my list of colleges(in order of choice–applying all regular decision because my lower gpa and sat scores)…hoping to go premed line:</p>

<p>9th and 10th grade went to Marcus High (Texas)
-GPA: 117/120…its a 120 pt system…i dunno if that converts directly to 4.0 system…if so…unweighted is 3.9/4.0
-Rank: 2/670
-Sophomore PSAT: 206/240</p>

<p>Classes: AP World Hist, AP Calc A/B and B/C, 2 semesters of foreign language, bio, chem, phys, two semesters of eng</p>

<p>Then after 9th and 10th, I went to the Texas Academy of Math and Science (TAMS). This is a program where you complete your last two years of high school by doing university courses at the University of North Texas…and thereby getting college credit:</p>

<p>Classes (College Level): 4 semesters English, MultiVariable Calc, 2 semesters Bio, 2 semester Chem, 2 semesters Organic Chem, Genetics, Political Science, History, Molecular Biology</p>

<p>Research Experience:

  1. Have been conducting Genetics research at the UNT campus for almost a year already, and going to be published in a scientific journal soon.
    Was awarded a TAMS Scholarship ($4000) to continue research over this summer. Have attended International Meeting in LA. Going to have poster presentations soon, plus of course Siemens, Intel, and ISEF.
  2. Continuation from previous summer at UT Southwestern Med Ctr, also in another genetics lab: review paper being published next month in “Genes, Genomes, and Genomics”.</p>

<p>Actually…I would add more safeties, and I wouldn’t consider Plan II a safety, but UT would be your safety. For MIT you need an 800 in math, simple fact, and plus the fact that you’re Indian, no offense. I think you have a chance at Stanford though…apply and find out though.</p>

<p>Work on the SAT, but make sure that you put a lot of effort into the SAT IIs. Bio and chem are both tests where, with enough work, you could certainly get 800s.</p>

<p>thanks a bunch, other than improving test scores (sat ~2250; sat2 bio and chem ~780) and gpa (to ~3.85) what else could i do to improve chances at stanford?..what do the adcoms there focus on? ecs? scores? recs?</p>

<p>Yeah, sorry I have to say being Indian will hurt your chances at high end school, I wouldn’t say you have no shot at upper-tier schools:</p>

<p>If I were you I wouldn’t listen to anyone here regarding your actual chances at these institutions. Just do your best and you have nothing to worry about…you don’t need an 800 math to get into MIT (an inane assumption). According to the CB website, the 25-75 percent SAT math score bracket at MIT is 730 - 800. Therefore, don’t listen to people who think they know all about the college admissions process when in fact they are oblivious.</p>

<p>To prove my point, my friend got Waitlisted, then accepted at MIT with 780 math, 700 verbal, 770 math iic, 740 chem. His parents weren’t alums and he had no spectacular E.C.s . He did, however, do extensive summer research at a major pharmaceutical company which helped augment his resume. Get good recs, MAYBE retake your SATs to attain your best possible score, and then write solid essays. You stand a better chance than you think :)</p>

<p>The only reason those two said you would be rejected is simply because of statistics within the schools. They are both ivy-league, and hence perfectly well-rounded and overachieving students get rejected left and right. It doesn’t mean you suck and don’t have the stats, because you do.</p>
