http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/crime/article/Seguin-teen-accused-of-killing-cop-indicted-on-12272523.php describes a previous encounter between police and Daniels, where Daniels was driving a car that resembled that involved in theft of a gun.
Even pocket pistols are usually at least 5 inches long. Any competent search should have been able to find it, but there’s no need to pile on a deceased cop.
@Ohiodad51 , yes, I am trying to discuss the matter as general policy, not as related to this one very sad death. Roethlisberger apparently wanted to discredit the idea of any limitation on magazine size because it wouldn’t have prevented this particular death. As I said, the obvious retort to his argument is that the only thing that would have prevented this death is no gun at all, but I doubted he wanted to go there.
I could have repeated my initial statement
but piling on and blaming the officer for his own death seems distasteful to me.
I am engaged in trying to find what compromises could be made that would still enable responsible people to hunt, target shoot, or protect themselves in the unlikely event that it was necessary while limiting the ability of bad actors of all stripes to mow down large numbers of people, the ability of children to shoot each other by accident, for people to commit suicide, shoot their spouses, etc. My first and preferred solution is not to confiscate everyone’s guns.
BTW, I see that the NRA is opposing bi-partisan legislation to ban bump stocks. Predictable, but depressing.
If there’s no connection to the Texas Tech incident, maybe you should create a new thread on magazine size and whatever else you want to discuss.
Fair point, @roethlisburger , but that is what we have been discussing for a while.
As a matter of curiosity, what do you think could have prevented this particular death?
^ the legislation under discussion bans anything that could “increase the rate of fire of a semi automatic rifle”. This includes certain types of triggers, buffer springs, after market ejectors/extractors, charging handles (a device used to more efficiently “cock” a rifle) and technically even magazines themselves. Bump stocks are not mentioned. Should someone introduce a piece of legislation to ban bump stocks without effectively trying to ban semi auto rifles themselves, I am willing to bet the NRA would support it. On the other hand, trying to sell this piece of legislation as a “bump stock ban”’ will likely be viewed by the majority of gun owners and the NRA as another attempt to use a tragedy to further the goal of banning as many weapons as possible.
And the only thing that could have prevented this, other than the shooter himself, was better police work at the time of detention and after.
^ lol, I didn’t think about the word I used that got asterisked out above. If the phrase doesn’t make sense, just replace the asterisks with “mechanically prepare a firing pin to strike the primer”
I’m still trying to figure out what it is.
Could it be “a male bird, especially a rooster”?
^ Lol. It could in fact.
AH!! Light breaks over marblehead.
