Texas Universities

I’ve been looking at colleges and I think I have a list determined, but I’m not 100% sure it’s the right list. Could y’all look over my list and tell me if I’m being too ambitious? At these schools I’m hoping to double major in Spanish and Psychology as my ultimate goal is to be a counselor for underprivileged youth in predominantly Hispanic communities.

My stats:
Race: White
Gender: Male
State: Texas
SAT: 1690 (570CR, 520M, 600W)
ACT: 25
GPA: 3.3UW, 3.7W
Class Rank: Top 50%

Extracurriculars:
Track(9th-12th)
Student Council(9th-12th)
National Spanish Honor Society(10th-12th; President-12th)
Choir(9th-10th)
Church Youth Group(9th-12th)

Classes:
9th: Pre-AP English, Geometry, Biology, AP Human Geography(2), Speech/Health, Choir, Pre-AP Spanish 2, Track
10th: Pre-AP English 2, Algebra 2, Chemistry, Pre-AP World History, Psychology, Choir, Pre-AP Spanish 3, Track
11th: English 3, Precalculus, Physics, US History, AP Psychology(5), AP Spanish 4(4), Track
12th: AP English Literature, Astronomy, Government, Economics, AP Spanish 5, Track

Schools:
Reach:
Texas Christian University
Texas A&M University
Trinity University

Match:
Abilene Christian University
Stephen F. Austin State University
Tarleton State University
Texas Tech University
University of Mary Hardin Baylor
University of North Texas

Safety:
West Texas A&M University

All of the schools are affordable according to the net price calculators. I’ve visited TCU, A&M, ACU, TSU, TTU, UNT, and WT. Which of these schools would give me the best preparation in Psychology and Spanish and have good job placement after college? Also, do I need another safety or are there any colleges that should be on this list?

I’d prefer to stay in the state of Texas or maybe Oklahoma at a school that’s preferably less than an 8hr drive from home(Abilene, TX).

Whoops, I forgot to include Algebra 3 in the classes I’m taking as a senior.

How far are you from San Antonio? Is UTSA an option?

I’m considering Trinity which is also in San Antonio, so not too far. UTSA is like 3.5hrs from me, but I’ve actually been to the campus before and it isn’t pretty at all. Like people think of West Texas, where I live when someone says desert, but the UTSA campus is basically designed to look like the desert(sand colored buildings and cacti), which I do not like. Plus I was told a lot of people are commuters and I would have to live on campus.

I have heard great things about ACU, but it depends on the size of school that you are looking for. It might be worth your time to look at Arkansas or Oklahoma because both of those schools will wave out-of-state tuition to Texas residents. Oklahoma Baptist is also a school that many people seem to love. Hope this helps!

<a href=“Texas Public Universities - Requirements for Guaranteed Admission 2015 - State Forums - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/texas-colleges/1677484-texas-public-universities-requirements-for-guaranteed-admission-2015.html</a> indicates that University of North Texas, Stephen F. Austin State, and Tarleton State may be safeties, based on the automatic admission criteria (but check their web sites for details, like if any ACT/SAT subscores are required, or there are specific high school course requirements). Several other schools in that list have automatic admission criteria that you may qualify for with your rank and ACT/SAT scores.

Those with a large number of Latino students may allow for more opportunities to practice Spanish language in non-classroom contexts.

Oh wow, I had only been told by guidance counselors of the top 10% rule. I never realized other schools had different requirements! Thank you so much! That makes me feel a lot better.

Also if that’s the case I will probably take SFA and UNT off my list since Tarleton’s closer to home and I really liked their psychology department. Taking TTU off of my list, too since the party scene is very big there.

@branbragg‌ I’ve been looking mainly at Christian universities and schools without a major party scene, so I will definitely look into Oklahoma Baptist, but that’s the reason why I had already ruled out OU, OSU, and UA.

My list as of now:
Reaches:
TCU, A&M(mom went here), Trinity, and Southwestern
Matches:
ACU, UMHB
Safeties:
WT, TSU

Does anyone know of any Christian affiliated universities in the state of Texas that I’d have a better shot of getting into?

There are many, many students at OU who never party, and those that do typically only go out about once or twice per week. In fact, the general consensus among my friends, including those in Greek life, is that the University of Oklahoma is not a party school.

Baylor? Not the same as Mary Hardin Baylor. Protestant, right?

Maybe look into
St. Edwards-in Austin basically
UIW-San Antonio
Saint Marys- San Antonio

If you look in Arkansas for strongly Christian schools, there is Ouachita Baptist University and John Brown University.

Yes, Baylor University is completely different than Mary Hardin Baylor.

Do you want Christian counseling or just general counseling? If a Christian focus, there is Dallas Baptist University in Dallas. Small, very pretty campus.

Hardin-Simmons (small Christian school)

Also, Ouachita Baptist is just 90 minutes into Arkansas right in I-30, so depending I how fast you drive, it might fit into your 8 hour window.
