Hey, I just thought I’d throw this out there- not a parent, but think I’d get the best response here. Does anyone how Thailand is recently? My dad is going out there soon for potential business there (like managing one there and in China) but no one I know really knows the situation out there. I googlenews-ed it and found kind of negative stuff but I also heard that it does attract quite a few tourists now.
Thanks in advance!

I was in Thailand last year for a brief time, and also had friends who went to Thailand last year for several weeks. None of us had any problems with danger.

Do let your father know, however, that there are elaborate scams involving selling jewelry. Friendly looking English speaking people will seek you out and tell you that you are lucky to be in Thailand on the last day of a special sale of jewels. They’ll help you get a taxi to sightsee. The cab driver will tell you the same spiel. The cab will take you to a temple or some place you want to see, and someone else will tell you the same spiel.

If you go to the jewelry place, you will be treated like visiting royalty and may end up buying something. At some of the places that do this, the jewels are worth far less than what you paid for them. At others, they are worth what you paid, but if you believed that you were getting a bargain and could sell the jewels in the states to make a profit, you’ll be very disappointed.

Speaking from experience. I have a pretty ring, that thankfully is worth what my husband paid for it. Thing is, I didn’t want a ring. I really wanted to visit the temples…

My daughter (she’ll be 22) is thinking of going there, and some neighboring countries on her winter break.
