Hmmm, most of my recent flights have been long and very smooth with no turbulence to speak of. I hope me lucky streak continues.
Somewhat recently, I was on an airline flight and noticed one of the later passengers to board was looking for space in the overheads to put his kid’s car booster seat. There were also parents who gate-checked child car seats. Wouldn’t putting the car seat in the airplane seat and having the kid sit in it be the easiest and safest way of doing it?
The last flight I was on was horrible. The kicker was that we were almost on the ground when we shot straight back up into the air. They told us after a good 20 minutes of silence that it was because of wind.
First and only time I was scared on a flight.
^^had that happen a couple of times in all my flying, and the culprit was (both times) another plane still on the runaway on which we were targeted to land.
Perhaps “wind” was just an excuse for another plane not being off your runway, roman…
I have been on a flight with an aborted landing and go-around (pilot announced that it was due to a plane on the runway), but the movement of the plane as the pilots changed from descent for landing to going around did not feel dangerous.
Perhaps. The last leg of the flight was really rough though. There was a big wind storm.
We got to our hotel and all of the pool furniture was at the bottom of the pool from the wind…
The worst turbulence I’ve ever experience was due to the wake of an aircraft in front of ours. There was an actual ‘boom’ and shudder.
Interesting that the prediction is for 2050-2080. Far enough out that there will be few reading about it today to vouch for the validity.
I absolutely hate turbulence. I’m fine on flights until they get bumpy, and then I feel like I’m on a theme park ride five miles high that I can’t get off. So this is terrible news for me. Maybe the three times as bad turbulence will occur when I’m 90, but I assume turbulence is going to be on the rise as carbon emissions continue to rise as well.
My flight the other day from Indianapolis to SF was quite bumpy the seatbelt sign was on well more than 1/2 of the flight specifically because of the turbulence. If you stayed in your seat, it was fine.
Thanks for mentioning this. I thought it was just my bad luck as of late. I also was on an “aborted landing” flight in the last year due to wind. It really scared me. As we were descending, the plane kept rocking left and right. It seemed like when we were about 50 feet from the ground, the plane suddenly took off upwards. I was shocked, and thankful, to see how much lift the pilot was able to get in the period of a few seconds. We circled around for another 20 minutes and were able to land safely.
