We always still eat at dinner time - maybe a bit on the early side, like 5, but not the 2 or 3 that others mention.
We eat between 5-6. People usually show up between 3-4p.
We usually eat around 4. I can’t wait! I love Thanksgiving. It helps that my sister does all the work (with my aunts and uncle).
Jeans and nice shirts. My guess is that S1 will wear a geeky t-shirt. I will wear comfy knit pants and velour tunic. (Costco has some nice french terry casual pants for under $20!). We all help with cooking, so we tend to avoid spoiling nice clothes. No football til after dinner, and then it’s usually only S2 and I who pay any attention to it. BIL sets up the table in the living room and uses the buffet to set up all the food. We eat around 3, which is insanely early IMHO. but my SIL’s parents come over for dinner and they often go see friends in the evening, so it’s a relatively early evening. Some members of my family dig into the leftovers around 9 pm.
Our main goal is to avoid the fire alarm going off. The fire department showed up one Thanksgiving because BIL couldn’t get the automatic call-in deactivated fast enough. We invited the firefighters in for dinner, but they declined.
^^^^
Football and fire alarms brings to mind the Vizio Ultra HD Thanksgiving commercial which seems to be on “auto loop” in my neck of the woods. Love the little guy absconding with the corn cob in bottom left - hilarious!

We are a mixed bag. Grandma and grandpa will wear what they wear to church. Slacks and a nice top for me. H in wool pants if it’s cool and khaki if it’s warm. Nieces and nephews in a WIDE variety of dress and undress. Sister in spandex work out clothes (like ALWAYS). D is in Berlin and will be at three Tgiving dinners through the week. She and her American friends do their best to approximate full pilgrim gear.
We eat mid afternoon because some of us come from out of town and the weather doesn’t always bid well for driving back late at night. Plus my 82 year old mom is ready to be DONE by about 6pm!!!
We eat around 3 or 4, because that’s when our turkey is usually done!
The nibbling continues long after dinner.
H cooks the turkey so if his beloved Packers are playing he times the meal around the game. If not, we usually eat around 4.
We are casual and comfy. My table isn’t really fancy either because the table itself is too pretty to cover up. I use a table runner rather than table cloth . I don’t use a centerpiece because I prefer to put as much food on the table without having to step away for seconds . Depending on how many we have for dinner ( this year , just four of us ) we either use my dishes from WS or else some other dishes I bought at Home Goods for a crowd. I use my husband’s inherited silver wear that I just polished last week.
I want everyone to feel comfortable and enjoy just being together since we don’t get to many chances to do that with half of our daughters living away
We like to eat after the Lions lose, drowning our sorrows
We eat between 3 and 4. I aim for 4, but the turkey’s usually done earlier than I expected.
Dress is casual - jeans, sweaters, sweatshirts.
I use a linen tablecloth and napkins, my Thanksgiving china with turkeys, crystal stemware, silver flatware, a center piece, place cards (because it is just easier then traffic directing). For the last few years, for all dinner parties, I have put food on the buffet and had guests serve themselves. Some of my family/friends eat a lot and some very little. This just makes my guests more comfortable. Since my husband will always have seconds, others are comfortable doing so as well.
Guests will arrive about 12:30/1:00 for drinks/appetizers in the parlor and we’ll try to sit down in the dining room around 2:00 /2:30. A few have insisted on bringing sides and I don’t know how that will work with the kitchen timing. It isn’t clear to me if some intend to cook their sides in my kitchen once they get here. But it will be fine one way or another.
I am wearing a velvet duster this year and find myself more on trend than is usual.
I aim for four, so my Mom and sister can drive back to PA, which is about a 2 hour drive. I’d make it earlier, but everyone feels like if we eat too early, things can wind down too early with the turkey sleepiness. I’m still appreciating not having anyone in marching band, which we did for eight years (but that was like 11 years ago.)
We eat between 4 and 5, with appetizers & drinks before.
Table is set with the good China, silver, and crystal. Nice table linens. When we got this table several years back we bought custom table pads so we don’t have to worry about trivets and the such. H and the girls set the table in the morning while I’m cooking.
Dress is casual. I might wear a knit skirt, but that’s as dressy as it gets. The younger generation might wear jeans or might wear dresses. Men are in khakis or jeans. No sweatpants, $200 or otherwise.
Haha on the Lions Deb. This year I’m THANKFUL because it’s a rarity but the Lions are NOT playing the Packers on T-Day. They often do and since 1/2 of us are Packers fans and 1/2 are Lions fans - it makes things a little tense!!! The Packers don’t play till evening this year so no stomach flipflopping till I get back home.
I love getting up on Tday morning and turning on the Macy’s parade, followed by the dog show while I do some cooking , although my goal is to do as little as possible on the day of the feast. My husband isn’t a football guy since he didn’t grow up in the US . If we have guests who watch it, they can tune in to whatever they want
@lje62 I think we live parallel lives, at least on Thanksgiving.
We don’t have a TV and none of my guests will even know what teams are playing. Probably they know it’s football season. But I wouldn’t swear to it.
We aren’t anti-TV pretentious, but just live so far out in the country we’d have to have satellite which is just to complicated for me. We watch streaming stuff.
Nice sweater and “faux jeans.” For the guys, that’s stretchy tights that look like jeans, but have some “give” to them.
I decorate a little with fall decor. I like to make the house look pretty and special. MIL comes over and makes some amazing dressing and gravy, and my Ds chip in to help with the cooking.
This year D1 is spending Thanksgiving with her SO’s family, but Christmas with us. We’ll miss her, but understand.
