So the countdown to the holidays has started once Halloween is over. Is it just me or this time of the year seems to come so quickly each year. I like to enjoy time spent with family but don’t like the stress and hectic days that come with all the planning and preparing. Anyone planning to shop on Thanksgiving?
Yes, dh brines the turkey.
No shopping on T’giving. Absolutely not.
No no no to shopping on Thanksgiving. One of the best moments of the year is about 9:00 pm on Thanksgiving, having cooked all day, hosted all day (which ain’t easy for an introvert), fed a crowd, cleaned up and stowed the leftovers. Then changing into sweats and slippers, and plopping down on the couch with a second piece of pie, watch a movie, then a long night’s sleep. Instead – get bundled up to go out in the cold, fight for parking spots, jostle strangers for deals, stand in long lines, all at 3:00 am??? No thank you!!! Yuk!!!
Both DDs are now in apartments and preparing more food themselves, so they will be happy with taking back leftovers. This is the older DD’s senior year in college. Plan to add the corn pudding recipe along with the traditional foods. Glad for the time together and H’s 4 day weekend.
A cooking site I follow put together a list with links to all the Thanksgiving recipes from the major foodie magazines. If you’re looking for something new to try, it might be worth a glance to see if what’s there:

That is an amazing list of recipes! I would like to sample each of them!
No shopping on Thanksgiving!
Thanks doschicos!
I love great cookbooks and the great recipe mags (and sometimes newspapers like NYT.) Even the old cookbooks from MIL. On the mag front, I had to grit my teeth and not renew hard copy subscriptions.
Since H got his pellet smoker and has taken classes in making all kinds of food on it, we’ve hosted TDay dinner for most of the extended family. He smokes the biggest bird that will fit, and his family, not traditionally fond of turkey gobbles it up. Lol. We make all the traditional sides and some of the relatives bring specialties of their own to share.
Here’s my question-I am on a very low-carb diet for health reasons, and I’ve been rather successful at losing weight. I can steer clear of the potatoes, the stuffing (sob) and all the rest, but I am famous for my pumpkin pie, which I’ll make, but really, really shouldn’t eat. Like, at all. Does anyone know of a low-cab pumpkin pie-like dish that actually tastes good? How about a sugar-free pumpkin cheesecake? It’s really the spices that I enjoy more than the sugar-loaded original.
@sseamom look at these pumpkin cheesecake recipes.

Oooh, thanks, raclut! That second site has some other recipes that look good too. I’ll need to look at them.
I was just about to suggest small portions. The minis on the 2nd site have no added fat- like that.
LF, I don’t really want to eat a dime-sized bite of “real” pie. I want to feel like I’m actually eating-does that make sense? It’s been relatively easy (so far, crossing fingers) to make substitutions for things I shouldn’t have during regular meals, but pumpkin pie is something I only make once a year and usually it’s the highlight of my Thanksgiving meal . I’d rather not even make it if I’d have to restrict myself so. I like those little cupcake-sized cheesecakes though.
Isn’t pumpkin custard (pumpkin pie without the crust) low-carb? Looking at this recipe, I’d make it with about half the sugar given (because I’ve been eating so little sugar that I’m super-sensitive to sweets) and use half brown sugar half maple syrup. That would be about 30 g of carbs per serving. http://www.tasteofhome.com/recipes/pumpkin-custard
Thanksgiving is a day that I don’t want to think about calories either.
Sseamom, yes, makes sense.
Thanks @doschicos !
@sseamom, we were out to dinner last night, so I don’t have a recipe, but my daughter ordered a pumpkin creme brulee for dessert that was fabulous. Had the flavors of pumpkin pie but not the sugary sweetness of it.
