The about me thread

Name: Northstarmom sent me here from AOL when CC had old format , but I didn’t post much. Name came from oldest whom I thought of as a marh guy though comp sci was his real interest. I loved math, but never took more than Calculus.

Education: Harvard (where I essentially majored in art- kind of dumb), grad school in architecture at Columbia, lots of watercolor classes in various locales

Jobs: My first job was helping put up exhibits in a USIS library in Dar es Salaam. (Maybe that’s a fun fact!) Librarian at the Munger Africana Library at Caltech. Various architecture jobs in Pasadena, Munich and Scarsdale before going off on my own in 1998. Fairly serious artist showing in local galleries

Fun fact: Lived in Thailand, Japan, Somalia, Tannzania and Germany. Attended Japanese kindergarten, international school with a mostly British curriculum, homeschool, one room school house, American international school, public school, and private (prep) school so I consider myself somewhat of an authority on school types!

I’ve met jym626 both on her turf and mine. Countingdown and lots of NYers. Also someone from an email loop who I finally recognized from her injuries! Going blank on her Cc name right now.

Screen name was chosen to be as anonymous as possible. Only willing to give my state, NJ, “resident”, to protect my sons’ privacy (have 2) and my own only because I was online at work :D. Now both boys are almost out of school and I am not working so don’t give a #### if anyone knows who I am… deep breath:

In chronological order:
Grew up Wash D.C., finished hs in MI, finished college at U Mich, HUD economist in Wash DC, Wharton MBA, 25 years as bond trader in San Francisco, Hong Kong, Tokyo then NY, was a NJ"res" for 17 years, job ended and we moved to Huntersville NC.

Fun stuff: Have a 68 Corvette, still run and bike but my last marathon (Oakland CA) was 30 yrs ago, my wife is also a Wharton MBA (same class), have a 13 yr old Westie, volunteer as a Guadian ad Litem, have recently worked as an extra on the set of a new Cinemax show “Banshee” and the 2nd season of Showtime’s “Homeland.” Monday they dressed me up as an Amish Elder, complete with flowing fake beard. cc relevant: my older brother is a biophysics prof at U Wisconsin, and yes, we did sell our house in Oakland CA to Jerry Garcia (he bought it for his daughter in 1992)

cc ers I have not met: Packmom is around here somewhere. I always thought she was involved in cubscouts.

I also spent a gap year in France and spent the year before grad school living in a camper van photographing fire stations all over the country.

I am really enjoying your stories! You guys lead such interesting lives.

As for me…

Screen name: My name is Julie and I can be hyper. I was a lot more so when I joined CC as a high school junior, following finding out my PSAT score. I’m generally a lot more relaxed now.

Location: Upstate New York: born, raised, and educated.

Education: BS in psychology with a minor in mathematics. I start my PhD this fall, and hopefully I will make it through and finish it.

Jobs: Dining hall employee (wiped tables and sometimes manned the Mongolian grill), administrative assistant, Walmart cashier, resident assistant, factory floor worker (today was my last day!), and soon to be teaching assistant in grad school.

CCers I have met: None, though maybe I have and don’t know it.

Other Random facts: I can turn my right foot completely backwards, and I can also walk on the fronts of my toes. I adore cats and so does my fiance. I transferred twice in undergrad and also changed my major twice. Even so, I still graduated on-time and with a minor. I hate bugs as a rule but I am utterly terrified by cockroaches.
