What is psychoanalysis, and who created it?

Psychoanalysis was created by Sigmund Freud. It is a theory of personality that centers around a balance in the struggle, or lack of said balance, between the id, ego and superego. It divides the mind into the conscious and the unconscious. The id is the unconscious source of mental drives, and it operates upon the pleasure principle. The ego is the conscious, public self, which creates a balance between the id and superego. The superego transcends the dichotomy between the conscious and the unconscious. It is the source of guilt and pride. Freudian psychoanalysis maintains that all issues in life and all aspects of personality are based in early childhood development.
