@rosered55 you might want to look at selling some of those on Ebay. Some old computers can be worth a LOT of money.
S put 7 t shirts in the give away pile. He has a long way to go, but this is a start!
I am continuing to ship things to Goodwill. But the other day, in a spare room, I came across a pair of barettes, with pale blue gauzy flowers and a Hello Kitty plastic bead at the center. We have no possible use for these. But they did in fact āspark joy.ā So I am keeping them at least temporarily. #kondoconniptions
GF took 4 dolls and clothes to sell on eBay. I will pay her (not sure how much but maybe 50%)
These were not ākeepersā --still have Dās American Girl dolls.
So it is a win-win.
We actually have some empty shelf space for the first time!
Selling off the three antique dressers in storage next.
I had the carpets cleaned in part of the house. Our guest bedroom has a large walk in closet which had to be emptied for the cleaning. It was so stuffed it had lost the description of walk in. Overtime family members just opened door and stuffed stuff in. I cleaned out the stuff on the shelves. Much was trash and others for thrift store. I still have the bed top filled with all the stuff that was on the ground.
How do others store blankets that arenāt being used?
@mom60 Thereās a linen closet between the girlsā bedrooms where I store linens and blankets. Same for our master bedroom-linen closet off the master bath where towels, blankets, and sheets are kept. I have two sets-oneās on the bed, oneās in the closet, for all the beds in the house.
I am lucky to have 2 linen closets plus a large built in window seat where I store extra blankets.
I have a blanket chest at the foot of each bed. It holds the extra linens for that bed.
My daughter-in-law wanted her husbandās baby clothes. I mailed a BIG box.
and am so very glad not to be storing those things any longer. From here on out they are her responsibility to do with as she chooses. Hooray.
eta: she is expecting a boy
Extra blankets/pillows/sheets/inflatable mattresses - oh yes. Those can hog up half a closet easily, but they are absolutely necessary when the much loved family and friends are in town!
2 sets of linens per each bed here, too. We are past the puking days of pre-K when it made sense to have a bunch of extra Princess Jasmine or Little Mermaid pillowcases just in case.
(I donated all of those to the local pet shelter long ago).
I really need to get organized and have just 2 sets of decent sheets for each bed.
I washed some of the blankets and others I sent to the thrift store.
My H cleaned out some of his accumulated junk. We took 3 old laptops, an old boombox, 2 old TV with built in VCR that we used with the kids in the car on long drives when they were young. Several old routers. And a large flat screen TV that didnāt work to the E Waste recycling center. My H felt really great.
My oldest came over Saturday night and she accused U.S. Of getting rid of all her childhood memories.
Maybe call her the next 17 times you are going to the Thrift Store " Hi honey, Iām getting rid of that old set of mugs from Grandma. Please come get them if you want them". " Hi , Iām moving out that cheap '90ās keyboard that we gave you that nobody has touched in 15 years. If you want it, come get it before Tuesday"
I have the opposite problem, they have left far more junk than they care about. We are getting there, but itās slow.
This reminds me of a story. When S was born, my in laws drove out and brought Hās baby clothes. We were older parents and the clothes had been stored in an attic for 39 years! They were unwearable. Also all of the pants were lined in plastic (S had terrible eczema ). They wound up in the trash.
Ha. Yes, my mother saved a lot of my old clothes. (And, yuck, my baby potty.) When we finally unearthed them in the attic, it turned out most of them had been devoured for use as a mouse nest.
When I was cleaning out our old house in preparation for our move four years ago, I pulled down both sonsā baby clothes from the attic. Had a wonderful trip down memory lane, but ultimately got rid of 99% of it. I kept the dinosaur sneakers, child size 3, and the leopard flannel PJs I sewed.
I have the ultrasound printouts from when I had my twins. I vacillate whether I should get rid of them or not. I know what they look like now :-).
I also had little personalized puzzle stools and rocking chairs that were in the nursery. They arenāt going to be of any use for eventual grandchildren since they wonāt have those names. Someone tell me I should donate them and let some kids with those names enjoy them. (My kidsā names are reasonably common so there are certainly new babies being given those names.)
^Unless painting them makes them more useful to you or someone you know, time to take a pic of them and get rid of them!
I certainly have had the experience of finding stored clothing and other textiles damaged beyond repair. The baby clothes and blankets I sent daughter-in-law were pristine. There are some handmade items. And I specifically told her I had just been saving them for her, and she could pass on anything she couldnāt use. Before she ever saw these clothes, she was talking about sailor suits and there are a whole bunch, all colors and all sizes. Some of them she may remember from photo albums. There are also Christmas outfits but I doubt her baby will be the right size at the right time.
I did have the unfortunate experience once of sending my used maternity clothes to a friend who hinted and hinted and finally outright asked. She had admired them when she had seen me in them and we are the same size. Then she called and kind of complained they were worn out and ābedraggledā and what did I want her to do with them? Because she didnāt think she would wear them. There were a few Laura Ashley dresses, but most of the things, my mother had made for me and they were nicer than much of what was available at the time, but I did wear them pretty hard. I told her just to get rid of them. I might still have them otherwise.
I have a dress up box of costumes my mother created for my kids. It is too early to offer those to daughter-in-law. They are in good shape as well. I checked when I pulled out the baby clothes
I also have a box with my dolls and the wardrobes my grandmothers made them from scraps of fabric from my Christmas and Easter dresses. I doubt anyone will ever want those, but Iām not tossing them.
Keep the ultrasound printouts because theyāre kinda cool and donāt take up much space. Lose the name stools. (Snap a picture first.)
