Kudos!! As long as there is more stuff flowing out, you are ok. I always throw stuff out when I buy a new item of clothing.
Iāve got 4 bags waiting by the door for the donation truck. DH has been inspired. He walked around the house with his new camera taking pictures of furniture to sell or donate.
@Midwest67, I, too, have boxes of unfinished projects. I taught a parenting class for a few years and I have art stuff coming out of my ears. Theyāre going to my neighborhood preschool. yay!
Iām not interested in selling my stuff. Anything in ok condition goes to Goodwill and Iām happy someone else will get use from it.
As mentioned upthread, weāve been cleaning up my MILās hoader house. So I discussed it with my mom, who has many pristine ācollectionsā. She said she doesnāt know where to sell them. She wasnāt very happy when I said my crap isnāt worth anything, her crap isnāt worth anything, and basically no oneās stuff is worth much. She doesnāt need the money.
I foresee cleaning out 3,000 sf of house/attic/basement and a large barn in my future and Iām dreading it. It doesnāt matter if the items are in good conditionāitās still a ton of work, and actually a lot more work than MILās house, where we dumpsterized 99% of it.
Pictures are what overwhelm me the most. We have tons, and as grandparents/parents die, we are getting tons back. Ugāthese will be a year-long project by themselves. Going to concentrate on everything else and save pictures for retirement.
Last week, I took seven bags of quilt batting that our project canāt use to another group that makes quilts for kids. Went through the back of the closet tonight and found six more bags! Out the door it goes!
I donāt think I have the patience to try selling anything. Or maybe itās not patienceāmaybe itās just the extra layers of complexity. I think just finding a suitable place to donate so that we donāt lose momentum is key. (I have a date this week with a friend to donate crafts supplies to one place that takes arts/crafts stuff.)
I have realized this year, while struggling to declutter, that one obstacle is that feeling of horror over wasting stuffā¦if it can go to a good home, that really helps. But having to sell it is hard work!
I am using up all kinds of stuff in weird ways, which maybe is starting to make it easier to let go of things. I realized I felt too guilty to throw out some āniceā moisturizers even though I didnāt like their scents on my face, so now I am using them on my feet! The scent isnāt as noticeable and you use up facial products really quickly on your feet!
Iām trying to sell a pair of āNew in Boxā shoes on eBay. Iāve never sold anything on eBay before ā bought a lot but never sold. Weāll see how this goes. Because I never wore them, I really donāt want to just donate them. Iād like to get a couple of bucks, but weāll see what happens.
(Anyone want a pair of size 5 1/2 black patent leather heels from Talbots?)
You have tiny feet @VeryHappy ! My H sells lots on eBay - if you have just one thing up there, you might not get the eBay āthrill of sellingā right away, but no harm in leaving it up there.
I donāt have it in me to want to do the shipping part of eBay - but he doesnāt mind and has a system - so, Iām happy to write up item descriptions on the computer, add the photos with my phone and eBay app (easy) and then let him handle it from there.
Unfortunately he has done well enough that the eBay activity that was meant to āget rid of crapā in the house now has him (newly retired) going to estate sales, etc. and bringing MORE stuff into the house!
Hoping to start movement though this weekend on getting him to become more organized with his eBay stuff AND to start concentrating on some areas of the house that can be purged.
^ Ha , if you had size 9 1/2 Narrow weād talk
S sells a lot of stuff on eBay when he is home. Clothes he no longer wears as well as household stuff I want to get rid of. I let him keep the money, I just want it out.
I know I have tiny feet. I used to have smaller feet ā size 5 ā until S2 was born. Then everything got bigger.
May I join you? Iāve been working on my 2017 goals, trying to shoehorn ākeep a neat house and declutterā into a SMART (specific, measureable, achieveable, relevant, and time-specific) goal. The bag a week project does just that!
Welcome, @Amkngk! (Catchy screen name. Initials?)
Fallgirl, weāll have to arm wrestle for 9.5 narrow!
For everyday goods, weāve had a few yard sales in the distant past, but never come out ahead. It takes tons of work and time. We then end up donating most of the left-over items anyway. Much simpler to donate it all. I also roll my eyes when buyers ask to negotiate an item marked for $2 down to $1 (when it is already practically given away anyway). I know thatās part of the fun for some, but when I see $20 items for $2 at a garage sale, Iām thrilled. Iāve tried Craigslist for a few larger or pricier items. but even that takes a lot of time, answering questions that are already in the ads, scheduling pick-ups for people who never show up, etc. I do wish I could find someone local to split profits on EBay, in exchange for their time to photo, post, and ship!
I know. I joined never intending to postā¦
CC has a way of sucking you in . . . and then you can never leave. Like a black hole.
Like a black holeā¦or Hotel California.
Hotel California with good bar service,
I joined to ask one question⦠
I have a few things on the way to the house⦠Need to purge some stuff out of my closet next week.
Iāve had okay success with Craigslist and better success with the local āYard Saleā group for my area on Facebook. Meet ups have been easy for the most part. Iāve been surprised how reliable the majority of people have been. Iāve also made a few great purchases for my young adult children who are setting up independent living.
I do a triage of sorts - stuff to trash, stuff to donate, stuff to sell. Iām moving somewhat methodically (read slowly
) on stuff accumulated during 18 years in the house but have raised a really decent chunk of $$ in addition to donating and tossing tons as well.
Still working on it!
Is it worth sending dishes to replacements.com? I am guessing the cost to ship the items would break even with what replacements buys them for.
