The "Bag A Week" Club

I’ve got a pantry closet full of old flours, beans, sugars, and other baking ingredients. Thing are in wrongly-labeled containers, and it’s just a mess. That’s today’s project, and I’m sure that I’ll have more than one bag.

I was watching a show where it was mentioned that when you get rid of clutter you increase the positive energy level in your home. (feng shui)

Three, count em THREE good sized bags out to the trash, several items in the Ebay pile and a pile for St. Vincent De Paul (like Goodwill). That was mostly my bedroom, closet, linen closet. Tomorrow I hope to tackle a section of the basement!

I cannot believe this thread started 3 years ago. I commented on it close to its beginning saying, as most of you are, that I got rid of some stuff and planned to continue.

Well, I try. But every step forward seems two steps back. Since my entry we remodeled a bathroom and we rebuilt a front porch. A bunch of leftover materials ended up in my garage and some in basement.

Did do a purge of of hazardous materials a few months ago. Our county has a collection day. Disposed of old paint and wood stain cans, bug repellants, turpentine, etc. That felt good!

We are either going to build a house or make an offer on a small(er) house in the next year or two. In either case, we will seriously downsize. Mr. is in a panic mode… what are we going to do with the crap? LOL. Junk it.

My 16 yo daughter just brought a big bag of clothes down to the car that are destined for Goodwill. The rule in this house is that I won’t take them shopping for clothes unless they go through all their existing clothes, clean them, hang them up, and have a a bag to donate. They hate doing it, so they have to really need clothing before they’re willing to go through the rigamarole of organizing their stuff (which usually lives in piles on the floor).

I figure at some point this behavior will stick and they won’t have piles of clothes marinating on their floor [-O<

My husband is expecting me to go through all of his old electronics and sell them on ebay for him next year. I probably will, but I’m going to make him box them and ship them, since that’s the part that I don’t like.

Our coffee table literally broke a few days ago, and I briefly considered not replacing it, but I caved and went to The Dump (cool place in Atlanta) and got a fairly decent new coffee table for about $200 bucks. I don’t love it, but I won’t feel bad saying goodbye to it when we move in 2018. Very few things are going to make the cut when we move-I’m looking forward to starting with a blank slate, style-wise.

Inspired by this thread, I went ahead and did a quick assessment of the existing furniture. The dining tables (both have granite tops and looks awesome!), the Lunar Module, the Stressless sofa set, the Danish-made master bed/nightstands, and the three bookcases are the things that I will be sad to part with. Of the non-furniture, the exercise equipment and the Weber are coming with us - hell or high water. Other than that, the rest of the furniture can be junked. What we think is valuable will easily fit into a 2 bedroom condo… Mr. agreed.

@BunsenBurner

Your post is both inspiring and terrifying to me at the same time. We are not downsizing any time soon, but when I roam the house on a Purge of Stuff, one of things I ask myself is whether I’d take this item with if we were moving from a 3 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom condo.

Yikes. I mean, a LOT would have to go.

@BunsenBurner Inquiring minds want to know, what is the Lunar Module?

It is a round loveseat made for Dania. Lemme see if I can find a pic.

A-ha… Here it is. Whoever gave it zero stars is a moron. My cats give it 10 stars (per cat), and we fight over it. We both end up sitting in it - covered in cats.

OK, y’all. Shhhhhh. Do you hear that noise? It’s dh going through the garage. B-)

He didn’t even realize that I’d hauled off the stuff I had. And now, he’s bringing ME stuff, asking, “Do you really want to keep this?” LMAO I love that this current purge is ALL HIS IDEA. =))

Hehehehe…

I finally got my H to go through a Trader Joe’s grocery bag full of cords and chargers. Of course the majority of them he had no clue as to what they went to. Into the e-waste pile.
@morrismm - I can’t believe it has been 3 years since this thread began. I feel like I have made great progress but I still have a lot I could part with. My major accomplishment is the huge walk in closet in my guest bedroom. Prior to this year you could not walk in. The entire closet was filled including the floor space. You can now walk in. Find plenty of room to hang something and I have room on the shelves. You can now see the floor.
Next big space is the utility room. Lots of luggage, extra ski and snowboard stuff and camping items. Plus some old kitchen things H thought the kids might want one day.
My closet and drawers could use another purge.

BB, that looks SOO comfy! Sounds like this move might turn into reality before too long?! I’ll bet your stuff is in pristine shape and would be happy to find a new home if you can’t take it all with you.

Did some eBay writing up of a few items this morning. Now to tackle a spot to clean out.

This thread is soooo helpful. I have a neatly organized closet thanks to this thread, almost organized pantry, and we got rid of the MONSTER of a TV - all thanks to this thread. Yeah… the move might happen… Now the talk is that Mr. wants to keep the current house as a “summer palace.” ROFL!!! I have more work to do.

Put the current house in a big bag and take it to Goodwill!

Wow, this has been a really big weekend or decluttering! I’m proud of you all.

I went through a few shelves in my closet yesterday and have 1/ 2 trash bag of clothes that are going. Went through the small walk in closet in the spare room upstairs and threw out several old papers including a few books on the Meyers-Briggs testing I took around 25 years ago. I can find that all online now. Found a bunch of unused school supplies that I can donate. Plan to go through the rest of the room tomorrow.

I think I’m starting to frighten my H. He sees the fire in my eyes and the items being tossed in bags. So. Much. Junk.

“Put the current house in a big bag and take it to Goodwill!”

LOL!!! We decided to use the land as a Christmas tree farm and supply our friends with free firs and spruces.

Got through the rest of the spare room. I have a large box of school supplies to donate as well as another large box of general “stuff” for the donation pile. Threw out a bag of trash and recycled a large stack of old magazines. Stuff tht was kept was re-organized. It looks good!
