The "Bag A Week" Club

Yes, about books-I volunteer at the library book store, and we get donations all the time. TONS of books. About 10% of them are re-sold in our book store to support library activities, and about 50% are repackaged and picked up by betterworldbooks. The other 50% are in such gross, old, crappy beat up condition that we have to throw them out.

Please, if the book you want to donate is moldy, has pages missing, colored or drawn in/highlighted all over, the baby barfed on it, has half the pages stuck together because it’s a cookbook you used in the kitchen, just toss it. It would make the people who help to give the good books a new life very happy to not have to wade through the yucky sfuff.

Last year somebody left a ton of boxes full of books on the loading dock-we started to go through them and they were FULL of dead cockroaches. @-) No bueno! Just throw them out.

We have lots of old textbooks that we’ll give to betterworldbooks. Our more recent novels get donated to the library for their book sale. The only problem is that DH comes back from the library sale with a bag of books. Argh!

Thanks for the link to betterworldbooks. I recently discovered that not only does my county recycling take paperbacks, but hardbacks as well. I was surprised.

I sometimes buy recycled books/used through Better World Books and others - so great that I know more about BWBs.

Put my “recycles” out a couple days early in hopes someone may bite. My car and spirit wasn’t into taking it anywhere further than the curb.
All gone! Yea!

Good for you, gouf. People take the weirdest stuff! Mr. put out his old power tiller - a piece of heavy junk - never expected someone would take it, but a neighbor down the street was thrilled!

Most of my stuff wasn’t “weird” but very bulky and hard for me to haul.
I figure if someone wants to take the time to deal with it then they are very welcome to it.
It certainly saves me a bunch of time and trouble. If they needed it for home or to make an extra buck then it’s done it’s job.
My only regret is I didn’t put out more stuff! Next week

I wish I had some traffic so I could do that. It would just sit and then be covered by snow by the snowplow until April.

Always glad to hear when stuff doesn’t wind up in the landfill. On man’s trash truly is another man’s treasure - an old adage with some true to it.

That’s part of my problem. I don’t have traffic. Just enough “lookers” which is why I try to add the “carrot”
Just makes me happy when someone picks it up.

Suggestions for organizations that pick up? And what they want?

Better yet.
What are some actual guidelines for donations to major (minor with good intent) organizations?
Been told that old books aren’t making it.
How about holiday decorations?
Bedding?

Okay–is this part of the “bag a week club”?

Yeah. Cause knowing where to send your discarded stuff makes it way easier to send it.

agreed gouf78–knowing where to send your discards makes it so much easier to get rid of things! Otherwise I keep feeling like I have to keep everything myself even if I know I’m not going to use them!

I do feel like we have discussed prime donation resources for certain items somewhere on the 164 pages of this thread
but if you have something you don’t know where to donate, just tell us what you’ve got and I’m sure someone here will give you a donation referral!

@gouf78 , most vets or animal rescue organizations are happy to take used bedding (blankets, sheets, etc.).

Yes, I have never had a situation where a pet shelter would refuse to take a pile of old blankets and towels. They love that stuff for a good reason.

We use Vietnam Vets–can arrange your pick up on line–we put it on the front porch and they take it away.

I use the Lupus Organization (Foundation?), you can google it. I just go on line and select from one of the days that they will be in my neighborhood. I have done this for year and never had a problem.

I need help with finding a new home for an 1895 Quaker Grand, cast iron cook stove complete with water tank, complete restored by a leading expert, insulated, up to code, new nickle, etc
Has a GE Profile gas cooktop and electric oven. Gorgeous, functions perfectly–this was their top model. 60" wide, beautiful backsplash and shelves.

If anyone has a potential market, let me know! I’m leery of Craigslist. Usually I just list stuff in the “free” section of our newspaper and poof! it’s gone–some really odd, and heavy things, too.

^^^^I would LOVE to see a photo of this - I can’t quite imagine it but it sounds VERY special! I know this goes against this thread, but don’t give it away for nothing - it needs a special home!!!

Are we allowed to send pictures in pm’s? I’ll send you one. It is a masterpiece! Stunning. I paid $8,800, plus shipping from MA. I’d like $5,000, which is under its current market value. I know the buyers are out there–it’s finding them.

It is a real showpiece in a period kitchen. We’re trying to downsize. It breaks down into 3 pieces, but they weigh 500 lbs total.

And apologies to all for going against the thread a bit, but I have a bunch of posts in this thread on giving away tons of stuff, and in a few posts, unloading my MIL’s house into a dumpster. I’m just frustrated on how to find a home for this stove. It does need the right person who appreciates something like this.

Wow. How about some of the decorator’s magazines? One of them - I can’t remember which one - often would have ads in the back where they would feature classic old homes for sale (as ads) and maybe items like yours???

@sryrstress

Do you have any high end interior design businesses in your area? That might be a good starting point, to get a lead on a buyer.
