Rats. The retaining wall blocks left after old wall building projects at House1 got moved to House2. As much as I wanted them to remain at the old place… At least they are neatly piled at the edge of the swamp and out of sight. Gotta give that man some serious credit - he moved a truck bed full of huge blocks all by himself. Deadlifts are for sissies. Real men move chunks of concrete!
Yesterday was the first day of the local church rummage sale collection - brought my little pile of stuff.
Just went through a bunch of shoes - threw out those I can’t imagine anybody every wearing again - about a bag’s worth!
My H came home from volleyball yesterday with a bag of “stuff” from the garage of his volleyball friend. His friend was cleaning his garage and thought my H would like these items. Why my H took all of it I don’t know. Half the stuff is for sports my H doesn’t play.
It reminds me of what would happen every time DH visited his father. He’d come home with “stuff” even my FIL didn’t want, and I don’t mean family heirlooms. He’d come home with the free calculator FIL got for starting a subscription (who know if the calculator worked), for example. DH didn’t know how to say “no thank you” to his father, but then he didn’t get rid of the stuff after he brought it home either.
Do we all secretly have the same H? And if we do, can he store more of his stuff at your place?
DH then turns around and does it to our adult sons. He’ll come across a book, magazine, t-shirt, etc. he thinks they’d like and puts it on the bed in their old bedrooms for them to take when they come home to visit. Invariably the stuff is still sitting there after the kids have left. DH thinks they just didn’t have room to pack it - I have to remind him that they just don’t want it.
Real women lift concrete too. H and I took 1,200 lbs of scalloped cement landscaping edging to the dump Wednesday. We also bought 1,120 lbs of bagged topsoil Wednesday. Had to move each one in and out of the truck. 4,640 lbs of moving cement and dirt that day!!
My mom exclaimed she would’ve liked that cement edging. It was all dirty and mildewy and curved and the stuff that heaves and moves in our winters. The woman is 75 and still intent on acquiring crap like this, which ultimately we will be dealing with * again*…she takes junk out of my burn pile because she’s going to do something with it…
What a great week of vacation
We got so much done, hauled, recycled, and cleaned. It’s a good thing we don’t have 2 weeks though, because we cannot move!
Way to go, @sryrstress! I do lift concrete. But I draw the line at 60 lb bags of solidified Sakrete.
Now you need a vacation from your vacation.
Husband went through his shoes (another bag) and went through our cookbooks (a small stack to donate)
Several bags and boxes are waiting in my foyer. The donation pick up truck will be by on Tuesday.
Third son decided that he wants to move up to the attic. Yesterday, he went up and tackled some stuff that hasn’t seen the light of day since we moved in 20 years ago. After about 2 bags of that, he decided to work on his current bedroom (which used to be D’s) first. He got rid of about 2 more bags of stuff, primarily trash and recycling, like Gatorade bottles, but he also made a big box of D’s stuff, which he presented to her when she visited last night. When she protested that she couldn’t schlep it back to Brooklyn via public transport, my son drove her home. Yay, his room is looking great.
I am clearing out stuff for S17 to take to college.
The other night we were eating dinner on the deck and saw a bunch of crows flying in a relatively orderly fashion. I joked that they were going home from a hard day of work at the city dump. I had no idea there was a transfer station not so far from where we live - far enough not to notice its presence, so the crows were indeed flying from that direction! Mr. got very excited - we can haul things to the dump easily. Yay.
I can’t even describe how much crap we have disposed of with this move. Unbelievable. Every purchase from now on will be scrutinized even closer. I do not want the kids to make constant runs to the dump when the time comes for them to clear out our place.
I cleaned out my pantry closet today.
I don’t want my name being taken in vain when I’m gone and DH and S2 have to clean out stuff. They aren’t used to doing that, and it will be unmitigated misery for them.
Some of my quilting buddies actually have wills for the disposition of their fabric and sewing equipment. That stuff isn’t cheap, and it would be a shame to toss it all out.
“stuff isn’t cheap, and it would be a shame to toss it all out”
This is how we all got in trouble in the first place!
Hope those quilters wills mention people who actually WANT the stuff or it’s going out anyway. If you don’t want it give it away now while it’s still good enough to actually use and perhaps someone can enjoy it now rather than later.
Yes, folks often name a friend/relative or quilt guild or charity project. I would certainly ask someone if they wanted my bins of fabric before just dumping it on them! Our quilting project got lots of fabric donations from people clearing out their stashes. I can sew forever!
Oh that “Isn’t cheap” thing! Have to remind Mr. what they teach in B-school: a sunk cost is money that will not be recovered.
If we have no use for it, off it goes.
I am putting away the kitchen stuff we brought from house1 and already decided that we can live without some big bowls and other things, so I have a small Goodwill box going.
One of our kitchen cabinets started pulling away from the wall, so we unloaded the contents of entire row, figuring they are all 25 yo and made of inexpensive materials, so we might as well replace the run with the same cheap stuff since we are not ready for a full remodel. Figure I’ll use these cabinets in the laundry room if we ever get around to the remodel. Bad news: Home Depot sent us someone else’s order, which we didn’t realize til the contractors got here.
The good news: all that stuff from our cabinets is now stacked on our dining room table, and I am tossing a bunch of it, mostly things that are on the top shelf and never get used anyway. Our dishes are 34 yo and I have been looking for replacements since S1 went off to college nine years ago. It may actually happen now!
And HD gave us 33% off the re-order of the cabinets!
Our synagogue is having a yard sale this weekend. Am going to load up boxes of stuff tonight!
Reading for inspiration as I work through the umpteen boxes/piles from last year’s move.
