I’m sure someone would be interested if you offered it for free. It makes me sad that you are taking it to the dump - and paying to do so. List it on freecycle or craiglist. Put it on your curb and make the for free posting curbside pickup.
Facebook Marketplace, too…
No curb as we are down a private lane.
Our dump --has a small section where things that could be used such as a workable microwave can be placed and is free for the taking. We will put it there. Honestly, things like a headboard are not moving even for free here. I have been watching free cycle and Nextdoor and it all sits. No longer interested in Craigslist as it gets complicated. Have placed things for decades but it is often sketchy now.
So there is hope that someone will take it from the “useful” corner.
Mainly I am glad that H is finally realizing that not everything is considered valuable anymore.
He would be a total packrat if it were not for my need to have less.
I am planning on a move within the next few years and am trying to move things out bit by bit.
@oregon101 Do you have a Habitat for Humanity Restore? They will come and pick it up. I’ve seen plenty of headboards at my local store.
We are hosting a small family-only graduation party, so that has spurred me to reorganize a bit. I’ve passed along boxes of stuff to other people for next year (part of a nonprofit group I will no longer participate in since my daughter is graduating). That is such a relief, both space-wise and spirit-wise.
I’ve also set aside plastic tubs in the garage for college. As we buy stuff or as I clean out stuff, I throw it in there if it can be useful. Organizing for college is a whole 'nother thread, but at least it’s in one place to think through. I figure after graduation we will have to take over a space and start figuring that out.
Motivation for spring cleaning - this segment from CBS Sunday Morning fits right with this thread!https://www.cbsnews.com/news/making-a-clean-sweep-decluttering-your-life/
Very good article.
On that note, I have just been getting stuff ready to take to the church’s annual rummage sale as well as the library book sale.
The tax season from hell is over and I took the rest of the week off to get over it. Had great intentions for cleaning my house (which is a mess) and getting back to the decluttering. I have done nothing. Pretty much slept the first 2 days then have just been vegging in front of the TV -'well we did had to make a trek to the SS office 50 miles away to sort out my SS. I applied - in person cause I’m a green card holder so can’t do it online - for Medicare as I’m turning 65 next month. Got a letter saying they got my application for social security and that it was approved but they couldn’t pay it because of my earnings but my future payments would be based on the reduced amount (a 5% reduction) because I am getting it a year early. Even though I’m not getting it and didn’t even apply for it! Grr. Anyway hopefully that is sorted now.
I’m quite annoyed with myself for wasting 4 rare days off and getting nothing done.
I did manage to fill a bag this morning. Current goal is to try and get rid of the boxes of stuff that are piled in front of the sliding doors in the master bedroom. I seem to get tired very quickly with any physical exertion for some reason (maybe the 3 sedentary months of 12-15 hour days in front of a computer) so am sitting with a cup of tea. Will try and get another bag filled today. Tomorrow will be back to the gym to do some walking and try and start building my energy back up a bit.
@swomcatsmom: Delighted you’re back! You’ll be back in the swing of things in no time, filling bags and boxes just about every day.
You might need to get back in touch with SS to get that straightened out. They’re not the brainiest of government servants.
We had to go to the SS office and sign a form. Waiting for the next letter to confirm it is fixed. I hope I don’t have to make a 100 mile round trip a 3rd time! Also waiting to see how I’ll pay for Medicare b. When I called them they said they’d deduct it from my SS. I told them I wasn’t drawing SS yet but they still kept saying that’s how I’d pay! It was like talking to a wall. The guy at the SS office said Medicare should Bill me .
Yes definitely need to get back in the swing of it. I was pretty gung ho for a while but just got too tired with work. I need to try and figure a plan so I can make steady progress but not overwhelm myself so much that I give up.
I do like that article posted above. So true.
@swimcatsmom , just re-read some of your earlier posts…they sure got me motivated! I too, fell off the wagon a bit when you didn’t post much recently, but plan on getting back in the saddle…
@gosmom it’s so much easier to call off the wagon than get back in the saddle isn’t it! Glad I helped. Seeing the thread lol up this morning helped me too
I decided to do a little mini project - sort out my socks. My sock drawer is now neatly arranged and I can find things and I can shut the drawer! I have a rather large pile looking for mates - if they don’t appear soon they will go in the trash. Neither H not I wear long socks so need to donate them.
But seriously, where do the other socks go?!!!
Seriously – while they’re in the dryer, the other socks get wrapped up in fitted sheets, or towels, or in the leg of someone’s jeans. So you don’t find the mate until long after you’ve discarded the first one of the pair.
The whole missing sock thing is always a mystery! When we had a full house, I put a small basket above the dryer and put stray socks in there. About once a month I’d go through and, if any single sock hadn’t been matched up in that amount of time, I’d toss it. Now that it’s just dh and me, we don’t seem to have the problem very often.
we did call and was told they accept headboards–drove it over–and it was refused because it was not with a
frame. The good news is that the Gleaners were there as we drove up so they may have taken it.
Driving it to two places and calling 5…just done with it.
Friends came and took our D’s canopy childhood bed for their niece as well as a gorgeous victorian dollhouse
filled with little things–to be returned if needed. Gone from our house!!
Reading this thread reminded me that I just had a dream about throwing out all sorts of junky things from my house. I’m pretty well decluttered – we moved five years ago – but the basement is starting to pile up again with stupid stuff. It might be time for a mini-purge.
My sister has been visiting, and we got into the zone. We cleaned the China cabinet and some kitchen shelves. There are tablecloths I haven’t used in years, but I just am not ready to,part with them. Still, we got rid of enough stuff that it looks clean. I wish I had a few more days with my sister here to tackle the garage.
Wow, a long-overdue project is now in motion.
I am a fanatic about keeping pictures of my kids. They are both adopted and came with nothing of their background, so I was obsessive about documenting everything about their lives. Over the years I put snapshots into albums in chronological order (thank heavens) and stuck them on a shelf. Long ago I had also organized negatives and CDs, so those are in good shape already.
The albums themselves, however, have been falling apart for years.
My younger daughter came to me this week, after looking for pics for a school project, and mentioned she’d love to look at the pictures more except she’s afraid of breaking the albums even more. I’ve always thought the same thing but it got pushed off.
So, I have cleaned three area Wal Marts out of cheap but functional photo albums - the three ring kind you can add pages to. I’m in the middle of it all, and have thrown away a ton of pics that were blurry, someone had their eyes closed, and otherwise not the best.
And the best part is … they all match!! :x
I will never go digital - I still print out pics I take with my iphone - but there’s a lot less now and they are the nicest shots.
I"m still alive … and almost done with this project.
Honestly, it’s been fun. I’ve uncovered some gems that have given all of us a good laugh. I’ve also realized I need to better preserve some of the old pictures, like my mom’s (few) baby pictures when she lived in Italy during World War 2. I have a plan for those, but I am leaving that stack for last since they will take some extra care.
I am not so well-organized that I wrote on the backs of pictures who is who. Some of those already have that on there, from when I made the attempt when my mom was still alive. I might take sticky notes, write that information on there, and slip them behind the pictures.
I just know I’m going to discover another box of pictures when I think I’m done. 8-}
Well, finally back here. Didnt get any additional bags to dump beyond the weekly usual amount, but did get a few things over to Salvation Army. Spouse decided he wanted to focus on the front lawn space which was littered with pine cones and needles, so I helped him with that - also clearing out stuff from front lawn which could be tossed - handles from broken tools, some scrap metal pieces, empty car supply bottles (cleaners, etc.) so I figured this was still progress as it had to be done as well. Next step spraying lawn space with Wondercide to get rid of ticks.
Hoping to get rid of more stuff from basement but there is usually pushback that these things are worth money, and the solution is my helping him sell stuff - but the problem is he wont stop buying more, so no progress is made. Very discouraging at times, there’s little viable living space - every surface covered with piles. Our kids come home from college in a few weeks, hoping that might provide incentive to clear out more - we’ll see what next week brings.
