@Hoggirl, can you please elaborate on the task sheet you’re using? Is it available online? Sounds like it might be a solution to the task at hand in my house! Some direction might be wonderful!
@Panhandlegal - I’m not sure if it’s a private blog or not, and I don’t want to break any board rules. If you google the words “30-day DECLUTTER Challenge” several things come up as PDFs, which is what I have. The one I am using has a light purple border with white polka dots.
HTH
Oops - it was DE-CLUTTER (with a hyphen)
I was an avid contributor early but just haven’t felt the need to declutter lately as it’s all pretty clean now. I have for the past year kept up the Kondo folding method in most of my drawers. I’m pretty proud of that. But now I want to do more house stuff!
Well my big purge is coming up. It’s been a year since I lost a significant amount of weight and moved items to my extra closet. It feels scary to get rid of all my fat clothes. But I know I need to do it. DH will be out of town in a few weeks and my plan is to go through everything over my weekend alone and go to Goodwill the following Monday. Yikes!
What have y’all done about converting old camcorder tapes? I am looking at Legacy Box. Thought I might try two items and see how it goes.
@maya54 congrats on your weight loss! I, too, have loss quite a bit of weight in the last year and a half and completely understand where you are coming from. I made my first pass in my closet about a year ago. Gave away some but still held on to certain items. It’s very hard to wrap your head around the idea that you’ll never be that size again. The hardest part is to just put it in that bag. Once it’s gone, you really don’t miss it because you weren’t using it anyway. Good luck.
I have six bags to go to Goodwill. Some things from D1 wedding and things that we just don’t use. I also gave away items that DH’s parents had given us over the years. Each time they went to Japan they brought back something and I just held on to them out of courtesy.
My goal is to clean out my closet and purge through my sewing supplies and fabric in the month of January.
I just read a home improvement blog, and the author mentioned the so called “cantaloupe rule”: any decor item that is smaller than a cantaloupe just contributes to the clutter. It is apparently a well-known rule among home decorators. See #4 here:

Not that I have many tchotchkes, but it gives me an excuse to cull whatever trip souvenirs Mr. has on display in his office.
Hello everyone! It’s been ages since I posted here. H and I did clear out some stuff in December and took 2 trips to the thrift store for drop offs. Happy that he decided to let go of some duplicate appliances (like do we need 4 crockpots?) we had in the basement.
@BunsenBurner - I have heard of the “cantaloupe rule.” My mother was notorious for collecting small things - many from her and my father’s travels. I have gotten rid of a lot of it, and what I do have is in our on-site storage unit at our condo. I probably have two small tubs of tchotchkes up there, but I can’t bear to part with them. While interesting and lovely, I would not want them displayed. Before we did our large downsize, we had two curio cabinets in our dining room that contained what I kept and many more of her things, all artfully arranged by our interior designer. Just all too formal for our space and current retired lifestyle.
It has been dreary and rainy here today, so I went through shoes, purses, scarves, and my chest of drawers. Really didn’t find too much to get rid of (maybe 15 items), but it is all nice and tidy now.
Apartment Therapy’s January Cure starts today with 20 minute tasks for de-cluttering. Today’s assignment is declutter a drawer and I’ve done two over the weekend, so I’m going to call today’s assignment good as I go back to work.
I have managed to whittle things down over the last two summers to manageable amounts except for kids’ rooms. S commented when he & his family were leaving that he and his sister needed to come home to clean their rooms which is so very true. I am reluctant to dispose of their stuff without their involvement and it’s all in closets or drawers, so doesn’t affect appearance of the house. Twice last year D took 20 or so minutes to pull things to go to Salvation Army in an effort to make a dent at her closet clutter, but she is having a baby in the spring, so probably can’t count on her to make much progress this year when she visits.
D2 cleaned her closet before she went back to grad school. She did mention “if it’s in there and I haven’t taken it, I probably don’t need it.” That was a nice bag or two out of the house!
Yesterday resorted all the Christmas stuff and emptied out 2 tubs worth of stuff. Cookie tins, glass holiday plates, old crafty decor I don’t use anymore.
I just keeping telling H (the one who likes “stuff”) that just because we’ve cleared some space in the attic doesn’t mean it should be filled up!
Great article from my “spirit guide” on my decluttering journey:

The junk guy my Dad called CHARGES hundreds of dollars for haul away (amount depends on how much of the truck he fills, but I think minimum was over $366, up to almost $698 for a fll load). Then there are more add-on charges for certain types of items. He decided to look at other options.
We used 1 800 got junk type thing for clearing out my mother’s small house. It was about $800 but worth every penny.
@Hoggirl, my kids gave my H a Legacy Box gift certificate for his birthday and it’s worked well! Would have been even better if he had labelled our tapes better - it’s become a magical mystery tour watching the digital images and guessing the year! But having them in digital form definitely saves space.
@runnersmom - great to hear! Our box is on the way. We are going to start with just sending two and see how it goes. What format did you go with? I decided on thumb drives.
Set aside a box of unused red ball Christmas ornaments for Goodwill. My parents got them at TSS on Long Island, marked down to $1.24 from $2.49.
So far I’m having great luck with Facebook marketplace. People come and take my stuff away for me and leave some $ too
Baby kid stopped by tonight and did some shopping in my closet. She left with several dressy dresses, some pants, and a couple of blazers.
I also packed a bag of things to go to goodwill.
