Colorado_mom - yes, since the change in the tax laws, I no longer get receipts for my many donation trips to Goodwill. I’m just happy to have it gone and (hopefully) to a good home when I leave stuff there. I also got all my baby stuff second hand when I stopped working for a few years w/my second. Definitely worth it!
Good luck, 2VU0609! As a side note - we just put a house on the market - getting professional photographs that show the house in the best light was one of the best ROI actions we took! Hope the prep goes well.
My fox jacket has sat in the consignment store for a few months now and did not sell - so I have to take it back - so sad - I thought that was something I was rid of
Maybe you could try offering it to a local theater group? I have an eventual theater taker for my mom’s old dresses etc (in a costume box in my crawl space), after my sister gets a chance to sort through it with me.
I was able to donate some 1940s suitcases and 1950s (v good condition) lingerie (old fashioned slips - not underwear!) of my mom’s to a local theater company - they were thrilled! That’s a great idea. Colorado_mom.
I put an ad on a bulletin like thing that I had a big screen TV for sale (including model/size).
I got my first e-mail, and I’ll be happy to let it go “free to good home.”
I’ll be happy to have it out of the house!
Any time I’ve advertised something like this I wind up giving it away or letting it go for VERY cheap.
I went to pick up my fox at the consignment store. There were two other women in there shopping. I was able to sell it to one of them - she wanted it for her daughter. I got a little less than the consignment shop would give me - threw the consignment owner 10% (she asked for). We both made less, but it is gone to somebody excited about it.
Congrats to all who are letting go ideas about who is worthy of receiving our “bag of the week”.
Congrats to being open to new ideas.
Congrats to accepting that an item’s useful life may be at an end.
Seems to be hardest step😉
I’m relatively new to this thread but have to say I don’t think I ever judged anyone as more or less “worthy of receiving” my donations or low-priced sale items…
I took the “worthy” comment to mean letting go of family stuff as donations to charity rather than family members. That’s the hard thing for me. I know it’s unlikely that my kids (or sister’s kids) will want much of mom’s stuff… but for now I have room and still keep a lot of it.
Of course the one time I only put out a couple of bags for donation, the truck comes bright and early. Oh well, every bag out of the house is a win. Trip to goodwill is in my future. We also have a dumpster day coming to our neighborhood later this month.
The local VNA is doing their huge twice a year rummage sale where they will take just about anything. They start their collection this week and we gathered a ton of stuff to donate - old board games, old artwork, some kitchen stuff, coffeemaker, etc. I am hoping it all fits in the back of my SUV and we only have to do one trip.
My basement is going to look pretty empty after we take this load away.
Also, got my husband to go through some more clothes today and I have another bag for the local donation box.
Well I just went through my t-shirts and sock drawers (after my husband did his) - another stack for the donation bin and a few items for the garbage. Bathing suits so old that the elastic was no longer stretchy!
Ha, the unstretchy elastic certainly has made decision easier for me on some bathing suits where I was at first on the fence about whether to keep. No-brainer trip to the trash.
For some reason I hate the task, but I’m going to load up my SUV and drive to goodwill this week.
We have a dumpster coming to our street Saturday, and I’m getting some stuff ready for it too.
I have an old computer desk I was trying to take apart so I can dump it Saturday. After I’d removed some screws, husband informed me he may now want it for his upstairs office. Ugh
He’s been getting rid of a fair amount lately, and I’ve been really impressed. Turns out he’s just making space for bringing stuff here from his office. Apparently he has lots of textbooks at work. He’s mentioned 7 boxes! WTH???
This morning I scheduled a large item pickup for next Monday. I’m getting rid of the “cat scratching post” sofa and chair people here have probably heard about.
Not sure what we will do with our living room. We need to decide if we’re moving or staying before I think about investing in new “nice” furniture.
