The "Bag A Week" Club

Buy Nothing group is where I get most of the items for our house for babysitting my granddaughter. It’s a great resource and in turn I get rid of entertainment items we no longer use.

Those are both good ideas, but there isn’t an active Buy Nothing group here. In the past we had luck with a neighborhood FB group, but our current neighborhood is just one long street and the few children are older than GD. Fortunately, someone did get the baby items last night. There are a few people who look for things to pick up each week.

Just got our windows replaced, which is driving lots of stuff out of the house! Had to move everything in front of the windows out of the way, which was good motivation to recycle/cull/donate. Also just joined a Buy Nothing group, so am hoping to get rid of some stuff that way as well.

Just cleaned out all of the used paint cans form the basement. Many were already dried out, the others are out in the sun to dry out. Will be three bags worth when all is done.

That’s on my list after I get through the current windows aftermath and upcoming shade installation/prep. Lots of paint and cleaning supplies around here which need to go, and it’ll create more space as well.

I’m really annoyed that the last two outdoor workers at our house left their debris behind. The first was the guy who replaced a few boards on the deck – he left behind the old boards. The second was the guy who opened up our hot tub yesterday – he left behind the thing that covered it all winter long (like a big tarp, but not reusable) and the metal rods that held it in place. Just more junk for me to get rid of.

We had a string of workmen leaving behind tools over the course of a few years. It was an inside joke after a while - hey what did that workman leave behind - guess we just got ourselves a new screwdriver.

I would contact the guys who did the work and ask them to clean up after themselves. They have easy ways to get rid of stuff that we as homeowners do not. In my town, the rules for getting rid of construction debris (like old boards) make it nearly impossible.

About a month ago I donated the best of my grandmother’s crocheted table runners to a local historic house. Today, I dropped by and they were using two of them on tables in the house. They fit perfectly (a square one and a rectangular one). Made me so very happy!

Great idea! I just came across some bags of cross stitched linens with my mom’s old stuff (from grandmothers?), probably table cloths. Thinking the kids won’t touch them with a 10 foot pole now…. but part of me hates to admit they will never want them.

Great idea!!! I have some from my grandparents, and never thought of that!

Oddly wonder if they will come back into vogue in some way. We kept a lot of my parent’s mid-century items (furniture and other), simply because of budget. Nothing designer valuable, but now my daughter loves them. Will “brown” furniture will come back in (en?)vogue? But I guess that’s not in keeping w/ this thread

I have gazillion linen table cloths and napkins that were my mothers. I haven’t used them in 30 years, but I haven’t yet been able to part with them. Some of them are gorgeous. One was used at the reception in our house after my sister’s wedding. When I wash and iron them myself, they never get that super-crisp finish. But taking them to the dry cleaners to be done costs a small fortune.

Gotta love the Facebook photos of decluttered closets. Yea they look organized, but with very few contents. Apparently nobody wears the pants in the family at this house…

A closet without doors? Lol.

That closet is nonsense. No jackets or blazers? No pants? No skirts? The only shoes are heels? If those were all the clothes you owned, you’d make a closet only half that size.

The doors go on as soon as a real person owns it. Gotta hide the mess then!

Now that I’m retired and somewhat decluttered, my closet is still quite full… but there’ no longer off-season overflow in other closets.

I am trying to use the long weekend to do some purging. I went through my closet and a few dresser drawers. Hoping to get through the rest of the drawers tomorrow. I have about 2.5 tall kitchen trash sacks full. Not crazy full but full.

What I find frustrating is that several items I am getting rid of still had tags on them - never worn. I wonder why I buy things I never wind up wearing?? Anyone else have this challenge?

Retail therapy. Marie Kondo would tell you to say “thank you for making me feel good that day” and then toss it. This is in direct contrast to my “what was I thinking?” that I usually tell myself.

However once in a while I go “closet shopping” (and purge at same time) where I just KNOW I’ve got something in here somewhere that I’ve forgotten about. I recently found two brand new pair of shoes that I’ve never worn tucked in the back of my closet! And I really needed them–just what I’d been looking for! (saved a bit of dough that day!)

Not a bag but I was looking for something in the pantry and was moving a lot of jello boxes. I haven’t made jello in years. So I cleared it all out - 29 boxes jello and pudding some almost 20 years old😂. I guess I need to tackle more of the pantry.

Well I feel better about that can on whipped cream with a Dec 2022 expiration date I just tossed instead of putting on top of my strawberries
