The "Bag A Week" Club

Scanning is an excellent idea. I did have to send my then 30 year old’s immunization records when she was doing clinical rotations for her master’s in nursing. They were a bit of a mess - from 4 different drs in three different states. I think she ended up getting titers done to check.

It’s a rainy day, so I tried on some old work pants. I decided I could part with 8 or 9 pairs, and took others out of the closet. They may go next round.

I culled my wardrobe for fat clothes I will never wear again and off they went to a clothing drive. I have another bag waiting to fill as I come across more stuff from an earlier time in my life.

Do other people sometimes have trouble deciding if something should be donated or put in the trash? I had a couple of backpacks my kids used when in school. There was nothing wrong with them, but they were old and kind of dirty. (I didn’t try to wash them). Husband said trash, so that’s what I did, but I feel bad adding to the landfill when someone might have used them. But I don’t want to give the donation place the job of trashing stuff either. Sigh…

If possible, I try to put them in the wash and see what they look like when they come out.

I stress about those decisions as well. :hugs:

I have had a distinct lack of motivation these last few weeks. Need to climb back on the declutter wagon.

I was gobsmacked when DH came downstairs a few days ago and said he had gone through some clothes and that this pile could go to Goodwill. In the 12 years we have lived in this house, with his stuff in every closet in every room, he hasn’t agreed to go through things.

Maybe this is the start of something big.

Or maybe not.

The Goodwill store in Brooklyn is right in the middle of snazzy downtown. They have clothing arranged by style, size and color, and it’s a great place to buy picture frames and small appliances.

I have trouble. Sometimes I just put the iffy stuff in the donation pile and let ARC decide (I think they have a dumpster). Sometimes I put on BuyNothing or NextDoor/free. Other times the items sit in purgatory - this time a non-pristine bathroom runner and shower mat rolled up in my family room.

Purgatory items need dumping immediately.

Yea, it is destined for my next trip to CHaRM (hard to recycle items; not in my town), if I don’t have another idea in the meantime.

Trashed a bunch of dish towels. I have no idea why I saved them for so long, but it felt good to get rid of them. I may even get to buy new ones soon if I get rid of a few more.

Weeded out my swimsuit “collection.” And quickly ordered a couple of new ones!

Got six boxes of fabric ready for a yard sale at our synagogue; barely any of it sold. Need to find a place that takes craft materials – also cleared out a big box of jewelry and pony beads that I don’t need.

Now have space in my sewing room for an office shelf for all of my synagogue work.

Also hauled a bunch of stuff to large items recycling and more clothes to Interfaith Works.

If I have two minutes to think about something besides synagogue stuff, I want to make a list of things which S2 can help me haul out of the basement while he’s here in September. H doesn’t want to let go of anything.

I wish I lived by @CountingDown so I could steal her fabric.

I did get my brother to help me get a load to the thrift store last week. Now I have room in the ‘staging room’ to fill up more boxes and get another load. It is supposed to be terribly HOT here but maybe I can get some basement stuff done and cleaned out.

We’re not supposed to say bad things about the dead, but my mother was a hoarder! So much junk. Yarn, yarn yarn everywhere.

Funny (sort of? Also annoying!) story that kind of fits in this thread.

At my office I have LOTS of stuff - I work for a medical school and am director of a pediatric education program. Lots of kid stuff, literacy stuff, etc. I’ve been cleaning out a bit. Throwing away outdated materials, books that are damaged or soiled, things with logos from long ago, etc.

Well I’ve been noticing some items I’ve been tossing reappearing! Books that were inappropriate, bookmarks with past logos - placed out in our department welcome/reception area! The night housekeeping person has been going through my trash and taking things out! That’s disturbing! First of all, I eat breakfast and lunch at work - there is food waste in that trash can! Work notes and such that are NOT someone else’s business to handle! And the items taken out…my decision to toss, not your decision to save - and put out for the public!

It’s been weird! I almost started thinking about taking my trash home to dispose of, lol.

Instead I wrote a note thanking her for her hard work for our department but also saying to please not remove items from the trash for public use - that as the program lead the decision to toss is made for a reason!

So I’m TRYING to remove a bag a week or day at work, someone has other ideas!!!

Do you belong to a Buy Nothing group? I would try to see if anyone there wanted it.

Do you have a fiber arts guild, or weaving / knitting / crocheting group, around. I’m sure they would love to have that yarn.

Sorta funny but not really. You can end up clearing out your own stuff–twice.
