The other day I was looking for a lid for a pot. I have revereware and so did my mother so I should have lots of lids. Couldn’t find one. Looked in several cupboards and was stumped. Then I pulled out (all the way out and off) the drawer under the stove. There they were, 3 different lids and a straining insert.
We got rid of our Peloton Bike and Treadmill! Took up so much space, and I’ve been working out at the gym and outdoors so wanted to get them out of our house.
Such a win/win - less stuff in our house and a very happy other family!
Cleaned a row of kitchen cabinets and found out that a couple of big pans I had stashed in there weren’t magnetic. So no use on my new cooktop… and off to Goodwill they went along with some clothes I pulled from the closet to make room for my new additions to the wardrobe. Tossed the old plush robe though because it was worn and ugly. I need to cull Mr.’s collection of aloha shirts… he amassed quite a few of them because he used to buy one almost every time we went to Hawaii!
Dropped off 2 shopping bags of games/ puzzles for the neighborhood exchange
Scheduled a pickup with DAV ( end of month) and started to go through clothes and other items
My next Ridwell pickup featured item are winter clothing/ accessories ( they donate them locally). Already have a bag full with late H’s winter knit hats and gloves ( done never worn).
@FallGirl if you have a homeless shelter /organization near by they would likely love to have those hats and gloves as well as things like boots and coats and maybe socks if you still have them. Around here they especially worry about those who insist on living outside through the winter. Men’s outdoor clothing is especially hard to come by.
Ridwell is donating the items to nearby shelters. I’m waiting for the coat drives to start as I have several coats and jackets to donate. Again, they will go to local shelters and groups that work with people in need.
OH boy. After water damage, my kitchen will be torn down, and all the floors (not bedrooms), will need to be empty. I cannot imagine all the work involved!
I’m sure I’ll build up lots to discard, even more than I did during COVID.
Before the storm begins, I want to finish my puzzle
It’s finally here - Big Item pick up day is tomorrow. I’ve hauled the old carpet, padding, tack strips to the curb. One BIG umbrella that I think must have been left by the previous owners (we have 2 sheds). Brother will help with mattresses tonight. I may try to find some other things. There are some hoses in the sheds and they actually look okay, but I don’t know why there are so many of them if they don’t leak (in the sheds). My mother must have had a reasons for keeping them.
Electronics recycle this Sat.
Paint recycle was last Sat but I couldn’t go. I know I can take that to any paint store (just have to do it).
Only a small donation at the thrift store this week as I was in a hurry. I promise to do better next week.
I’m to the point where I think I need to concentrate on one room at a time and deal with that until I’m happy (I’ll never be happy). I’ve been cleaning by trying to find enough things to make a thrift store run and sometimes that just results in my moving things from room to room.
I’m starting a box of winter clothes/gloves/hats as one of the dry cleaning chains collects them in Nov, cleans them and gives them to shelters. I am guilty of being a hoarder of coats as I’m always looking for a perfect one
Oh I go to the thrift store WAAAAAY too often, so I like to make sure I bring them something.
My mother had a ton of knitting stuff, patterns from the 50’s, all kinds of needles, bits and scraps of yarn all OVER the house. I’m trying to get it all in one place to just make sense of it. There is even a half finished sweater but I know I’ll never finish it so just have to figure out if I should donate it half done or unravel it and donate yarn. There was a time I swear that every time I opened a drawer or cabinet I found more yarn and needles. Even in the kitchen there were tin containers (like for popcorn) with yarn in them!
(a little guilty here of craft hoarding myself but I do it with fabric and scraps as I’m ‘going to use the scraps for a quilt’ - or 482 quilts).
I’ve been incorporating a Buy Nothing quarter into my Bag a Week (or more ) and it has been really motivating with my decluttering efforts.
Every time I want to go shopping/buying, I’ve been going to a closet or cabinet in the house and doing some decluttering. I wish I could say I’ve seen some serious $$$ savings, but unfortunately early fall is when our fed/state tax bills are finalized, property tax second payment is due, etc. so it always feels expensive.
I’ve shredded 2 bags worth of paperwork and completely redone my primary closet. Relatively little clothes decluttering there (I’d already done a couple passes on clothing in the last year) but really good reorganizing and putting summer clothing away in 1 bin.
Trying to get rooms feeling more calm and organized with less stuff in them. Definitely work in progress.
I think it helps to have target dates for some things, and once a quarter sounds good. I had large item pick up (every 9 weeks) and that had me motivated for trash gathering and I ‘staged’ it in the shed that is now sort of empty. In that shed are Christmas decorations that really need to go to the thrift store this fall and then I can fill up the shed again with another carpet removal and OMG, clothing my brother left here and he will never wear again.
