Sometimes local theatre groups will also take costume type clothes.
I have been getting together boxes of memorabilia.
My two girls (who have since moved out) have their own in their now empty closets. Neither is in a position to take anything yet, but at least itās in one spot.
I have also been working on my own - this is stuff that is still important to me, but doesnāt have a home in my home (and might never but itās okay).
I realized that I was the only one who knew the stories behind some of these things - like my mom, who hated crocheting, made me an afghan for my first apartment (a labor of love for sure!). Items my husbandās uncle brought back from the Pacific after WW2, etc. So, for things like that I wrote it down on a piece of paper, and put it in the box with the item. It has been a load off my mind. If nothing else, the stories behind them are known. I will not care if they choose to keep or discard after Iām gone, but they will know why I kept them and be able to make a more informed decision.
I have several bag and boxes ready for tomorrowās pickup by the Disabled Vets. I havenāt gotten a confirmation email or text which concerns me, but plan B is to take it all to the thrift store.
I have a HVAC service company scheduled to check the systems in my house on Wednesday and they are collecting winter coats and accessories. I have several winter coats as well as 3 pair of boots which belonged to my late H and they will be getting those. They are all donated to local shelters and charities.
This weekend will be our Buy Nothing group Junk-in-the-trunk event. We gather at a middle school parking lot and everyone lays things out by their car on tables or tarps. You walk around and pick up things you need. Itās a great way to get rid of collections of smaller things from closets and junk drawers. My DIL and I are filling some boxes to get ready. I stock my grandkids play area from it.
What a fun idea! I would just enjoy watching!
Thatās a great idea! I might suggest it to our BN group.
I would have to remind myself that Iām getting rid of things, not accumulating more!
I like this idea. Iām new to the Buy Nothing group, but am surprised at some of the small things people post. That stuff I just take to the thrift store (tin boxes cookies came in, a ream of paper, a birthday party banner). I either donate or if I had enough of it, put it out on the curb with a āfreeā sign. A free yard sale at a park would be okay too.
I donāt belong to any buy nothing groups, but I and many others post give-aways in our neighborhood group. I know we had at least one ātake what you want for freeā day where people just put stuff near the curb and people drove by. We post stuff as small as yogurt we might have received as a substitution thatās not worth taking back, to free furniture, with positive results.
OMG, I might REALLY need that!
Iāve been cleaning and found a duffel with hats and gloves, some ski goggles (definitely not any good) and set it aside for the coat and winter stuff drive for the homeless in Nov. There was a pair of like-new down mittens. I know I got them at an Eddie Bauer warehouse sale at least 35 years ago. They had these big sales where everything was really cheap and I bought all kinds of things like gloves and mittens, a down bathrobe, blankets, fur lined slippers (long before Uggs were popular). I gave a lot to family members at Christmas so bought all different sizes and colors. I usually wore gloves to ski so these mittens were rarely used.
My daughter just went to Africa to climb Kilimanjaro and was really concerned that sheād be freezing. I said take them and it is no big deal if you lose them. She said the mittens saved her. They were so warm.
I may never throw away anything again. I might need it.
Little kid browsed through my closet ādiscardsā and volunteered to sell some of them! I told her to keep the proceeds! She is now very motivated to help me. ![]()
I went to a āDownsizing Saleā in my neighborhood this weekend. (Think big garage sale⦠plus lots more stuff on the first floor - furniture, framed prints, tables of glasswear and knick knacks etc.). It made me a little sad realizing someday we may need to do same. In the meantime I did spend $10 on a nice folding lawn reclinger, with vows to get rid of the old one (picked up free at the curb a few years ago, fixed with some ugly and iffy mending - it owes me nothing).
Had a good āJunk in the Trunkā today. Got rid of a lot. Someone actually took my box of Disney vhs tapes! Stopped by the library after to drop off 4 boxes of books and dvds that didnāt get taken. Only had 2 boxes left of misc that will go Salvation Army tomorrow. Boxes not leaving the car.
Well Done! Doesnāt it feel good when you see somebody wanting stuff that once brought joy to your own family?
The clean out continues. Just put up 6 miscellaneous items on my neighborhood Buy Nothing. Hopefully Iāll have some takers.
Iāve been cleaning out miscellaneous drawers in the kitchen, mudroom and bathrooms. It takes me a lot of time to do each drawer but there is definitely a sense of satisfaction as each drawer actually gets cleaned out, even if the amount of stuff decluttered isnāt all that large per drawer.
Embarrassing how much actual trash was in some of the drawers
. Also, realizing we have a strategic stockpile amount of scissors as Iāve collected them into one location. Iām sure Iāll continue finding more as I have many more drawers to still go through.
Regarding scissors ā I have a pair in something like 10 different drawers around the house. Keeps me from going nuts when I need a pair right where I am at the moment.
But not all scissors are created equal. Some are better for cloth, some are better for paper, some are good for food, etc. Keeping the right scissors where they are needed is a good idea (cloth scissors in sewing kit, food shears in kitchen drawer, etc.)
Just did a closet clean out of winter clothes that no longer fit since I lost weight. Big pile listed on buy nothing and whatever doesnāt go is heading to donation center.
lol, I feel like I could supply an army of scissors-users.
