The Bangladeshi Thread

Hi, everyone!

It’s nice to see a Bangladeshi thread; and one that’s so large to boot. =D

I’m still a 10th Grader, so I won’t be applying for quite a while. :stuck_out_tongue: But it’s great that we have a Bangladeshi community to help those applying to the US.

Although, I know that students got accepted to Rochester Institute of Technology and Baroque College from Scholastica for the class of 2017.

I’ve got a question. There’s this school; Bard’s College on Simon’s Rock, where 10th and 11th graders can apply. Now the students who usually go there get an AA degree in their first two years and transfer to other places for the BA in the last two years. Of course, most of them are Americans, but given that a Bangladeshi has applied and gotten accepted, what are the transfer options for the last two years? I’ve heard that transferring is a huge pain for International’s especially if they need Financial Aid, so in such a case where a student went to college early and enrolled in an accelerated program, what chances would he/she have to transfer later on?

Or would it just be simpler to complete the A levels here and apply for colleges, at the usual time?

From Sunbeams,
We have two into Northeastern,
One into Cornell
One into Bryn Mawr
One into UWashington
There’s more, but I can’t remember.

This is a great thread! Keep it active! :)

Hi everyone! I will appy for the class of 2018,so came here to check out:-) my HSC exam is going to start on1st april, so after that I will be applying to USA and Canada:-)

Update

Cornell- Selected 3
Dartmouth- Selected 1
Amherst- Selected 1
Bard- Selected 3

Can anybody show the detailed statistics regarding the Bangladeshi students selected in different U.S.A. Universities? It will be useful for future applicants.

Thanks to MIT for admitting one student from my country and for putting me on the waitlist. I took my name off the waitlist.

However, it was a long, tough but enjoyable experience with MIT application process.

I will be joining a great school, which accepted me with a generous financial aid package.

It is almost time to join Bangladeshi Students in different International Universities. But it is still unclear who is going where as many students are found reluctant to spell out where they are going.

MIT and Harvard is having a special place in Bangladesh. Last time when Nazia Chowdhury went to MIT, there was lot of fanfare and had her special interview in different Newspapers and hence we came to know lot of information regarding her which inspires lot of Bangladeshi students.

But this time the girl who is selected in MIT is maintaining a total secrecy and we couldn’t find any information regarding her. When I visited her facebook, I could not find any information regarding her. Don’t know why so much secrecy. As she is the only student selected from Bangladesh, we are interested to know regarding her school, her results in school, sat result, regarding Olympic Medal, how could she manage so much time though studying in English Medium school, how many schools she had applied, where else she is selected etc. But no information.

Has anybody got selection in Harvard this time? Is it true that Harvard rejected everybody including the MIT selected girl student?

Anyone in this thread anymore?

Hello everyone! Who is gonna take the SAT this oct,nov or dec? Lets have discussion :)

count me in, btw new to cc

if i score high in sat as well as tofel, do i have any chance in us universities, um a bengali medium student got golden a in science, waiting for my hsc results yet to be published, i have literally no eca (participated in science fair in class 8 and took part in extempore speech in class 9 but wasn’t able to win any award), but was able to score good in school(was all time first boy in class 9 to 10 in dhaka residential model college and swing around top 5 positions in high school)

pls help

also how many sat words do i have to memorize, i have already did over 1000 words and still going on with numerous times of revision

Hi everyone. I have been following this thread for a couple of months, but this is the first time I am posting here. Its really great to see a Bangladeshi thread here in CC, but at the same time its quite disappointing to see this thread being pretty much “dead” for the last couple of months. Anyway, how many of you are applying for the fall 14 session? As for me, I am from Dhaka and will be applying to USA for fall 14. I have already taken the SAT once and will be retaking it this october. I just finished my A Levels a few days back, and now I am all set to shift my focus to university applications. So, what about you people? It would be great to get to know all of you. Maybe if we are all a bit active we can make this thread lively and help each other out. :)

@shadewitt, bro i’ll give it to you honest. you have negligible chances to join any good, even 2nd class unis in usa. We spent lakhs of money on o levels and a levels, and still it’s really hard to be accepted into a decent uni. And without any ECs, u shouldn’t even apply. If u get like 2200+ in SAT, perhaps u have a low chance in an average uni.

@Tanzim, what r ur igcse and a level grades bro ?
Which uni’s you looking into ?

@Shadewitt,how many SAT words you memorise it matters little but the important thing is to memorise quality words. and don’t apply to only Harvard,Priceton,Yale,Brown,Cornel there are myriad of colleges in USA. Without strong extracurricular activities it is almost impossibble to get into the colleges I mentioned, except if you write a stealing essay that they decide to admit you but thats a rare thing. There are other universities you can probably get in. I can recommend you some universities if you want, always apply to different tier colleges not just those ivy leagues. Most people from bangladesh don’t get in because they only apply to ivy leagues and they don’t even consider other universities,so always always apply to other good universities and also medium ranked universities.your greatest weakness is your extracurricular activity,if you had a few I bet you would be admitted at good universities, low ranked universities care less about extracurricular activities but having none actually puts you in a big risk. As you have excellent grades,so work hard on SAT try to score atleast atleast above 2000, to get into good universities you have to score above 2000/2100 or as high as you can. although many low ranked colleges admit students with 1600/1700 but try your best and get in the tops. Take SAT subject tests.if you can take 3 but most require 2 subject tests. It’s quiet easy to score 800 in subject tests.

Hey everyone,by the way are you guys self studying for the SAT or coaching? What about SAT subject tests? Which one are you going to take? I am going to take the MATH 2, Physics and Biology.

And btw English medium/ Bangla medium does not matter, all you gotta have is excellent grades, good extracurricular activities, good SAT score,TOEFL,IELTS and you are good to go. I know tons of Bangla medium students who had studied in USA ,Canada,United Kingdom and also people currently studying there but the thing is they all had extracurricular activities along with academics. But as far as I have seen canada and united kingdom seems to care less about extracurricular compared,I mention compared to USA.but it absolutely benifits if you have them. And btw you should apply to state universities in USA(don’t forget to apply to low ranked ones along with top state universities) it would be the safest bet for you but yes you can still get into universities but not in those universitites that emphasise on extracurriculars. Just choose the colleges wisely.

@amyharvard- Frankly speaking, there is no use in going to coaching centers for SAT. I went to Mentors last year and it was a disappointing experience. So I would recommend self-study than going to coaching centers. There are a lot of books available in the market for the SAT. So the best idea is to buy and study as many books as possible. As for SAT 2, I will be taking math 2, physics and chemistry. I am planning to give the exam in November.
@jamzter07- I am mostly looking into universities that are ranked within the top 200 in the world, but I am not even thinking about the ivies. I have made a list of 11 universities I am planning to apply to, but this is not the final list. The list includes Vanderbilt university, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Rutgers, UIUC, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Boston University, Stony Brook University, Northwestern, Ohio State University and Mcgill University.
By the way, I would recommend everyone to join the facebook group “Bangladeshis Beyond Border:Undergraduate Admission portal”. Its a pretty useful group for prospective applicants in American unis.

@Tanzim,good choice bro. btw what did you scored on SAT? And btw which books did you studied? Only barrons or did you also studied princeton review along with the blue book? I have all three of them. How did you studied previously and how are you studying now?

I scored 2030. Got 740 in maths, 710 in writing and 580 in CR. I studied both Barrons and collegeboard(blue book). But this time I am planning to study 3 more books since I am already done with barrons and the blue one. I will be trying to finish “Grubers SAT”, “Mcgraw-Hills 12 practice tests for SAT” and “Princeton review’s 12 practice tests for SAT”. I would recommend the book Grubers SAT to everyone. Its a really useful book and its probably the best for SAT after Barrons. As far as I am concerned, the key to a good score in the SAT is taking as many practice tests as possible. Finish all the practice tests in the blue book and then move on to the other books like those I mentioned above. There is no use in only memorizing words or going through the strategies listed in the books if you do not take enough practice tests. This time I am planning to complete at least 20 practice tests since I have got exactly 3 months left for the test which is quite a long time. Its gonna be pretty hectic, but I’m gonna give it a shot.
By the way, which universities are you looking at?

@Tanzim, your choices sound good. Do u need financial aid ? Or are you not applying for any aid?
And a good uni i know that gives really good scholarships (Full Tuition) to internationals is Alabama State Uni. You should take a look.
You didnt mention ur o level and a level grades?
