The Beatles tribute

Wow, who knew PG was such a Beatles buff? Good posts. I actually went back and listened specifically to the base line of *Something *, and I agree with your comments.

I guess it’s a matter of taste. It’s hard to believe he wrote stuff like “silly love songs”. That song is pure bubblegum music. I just think the Beatles without Lennon (Harrison, too) would have been a much different band. However, there was a synergy between the two, the whole is the greater than the sum of its parts.

I watched the whole thing. It was fabulous…extremely well produced. It sure beat Downton Abbey and the Olympics. My only regret…I didn’t record it. What a remarkable collection of fabulous musicians!

Can anyone name a band better than the Beatles?

They are still great singers, and it was beautifully put together. Nice to hear those old songs. Loved it, as well as contemplating those past 50 years.

Wow, Pizza girl! Will look for the analysis. There is something just so happy making about the Beatles, and the show last night brought it all home.

Tom Hanks and wife Rita sure looked to be having a great time. How’d they score such good seats?

I was sorry to see that Julian Lennon was not there and not invited to sing something. I loved his Valotte album and couldn’t believe the similarity between his voice and his dad’s voice.

I’m generally found in the pro-John camp because of the wit and literary merit of much of his Beatles work. But I also think that Paul has been underrated in terms of sheer musicianship - his impressive ability to play his instrument. Most of the sound mixes that George Martin employed tended to bury the bass line behind the guitars and vocals. but if you listen to a lot of Beatles songs closely or to versions with a different sound mix you can hear Paul often laying down some impressive bass tracks. Take “And Your Bird Can Sing” for example. Listen to the various mixes of that available on YouTube. Impressive virtuoso bass playing.

Is Paul still touring? We saw him at Fed Ex field in 2009 and let me tell you…the old man really put on a hell of a show.

I don’t know who this music critic is, but he hated the show.

^ well phooey on him, I say.

Rather a nasty, cynical review. Read the comments.

NY Times reviewer loved it:
50 Years Later, Beatles Steal Another Show
CBS’s ‘Grammy Salute’ Belongs to McCartney and Starr
<a href=“CBS’s ‘Grammy Salute’ Belongs to McCartney and Starr - The New York Times”>The New York Times - Breaking News, US News, World News and Videos;

“As John Lennon would say, ‘Piss on him!’” Lol.

VaBluebird - yes, Paul is still touring. I saw him in 2011 at Wrigley Field and 2013 at Miller Park. Both times, he plays for a solid 3.5 hours with no break. Not even to grab a glass of water. His catalog is amazing. About half is Beatles and about half is solo. He hits his notes - he does both the famous Macca Scream and falsetto - and he moves from Hofner bass to piano to acoustic guitar and so forth without missing a beat.

The guy could have written just Hey Jude, Yesterday, Let It Be, Eleanor Rigby and I Will, and he would already be in the pantheon of rock stars. He’s truly legendary to see in concert. He’s a showman.

Two songs I think are introspective and interesting are That Was Me and Early Days, both recent solo work. They reveal that there’s a regular man behind this celebrity and this mythologized life. Worth a listen on YouTube.

That review - Paul and Ringo “were trotted out”? Good lord. You’d think they were wheeled out in wheelchairs. What a stupid review. I should only have such energy and vitality as both of them when I’m in my early 70s. God bless "em, as they say.

Olivia Harrison is also a major class act.

I’m hearing this is going to be rebroadcast on Weds. at 8:30pm on CBS - anyone can confirm that? Great opportunity for those of us who missed it the first time around.

^^^I hope so! I hated that I missed out on the first hour and ten.

Pizzagirl, I was also impressed with how youthful and energetic both Paul and Ringo were. Ringo in particular seemed to be having a ball.

There’s nothing about a rebroadcast on the CBS website.

I just looked at CBS and saw that it IS listed:
Wed
Feb 12

The Beatles: The Night That Changed America - A Grammy Salute

C’mon CBS, just stream the darn thing online for us!!!
