And how many freshmen live there?

I just recently visited and then signed the lease because unfortunately I made a mistake on the housing application and was unable to get a on-campus dorm. Here are my first impressions of the Berk on College.

Location: Great, it’s right across the street from campus and close to Unit 1. It’s far enough removed from downtown that it won’t be to disruptive, but not so far away that it’s a pain to walk to when you want to.

Rooms: There are doubles, triples, and quads, just like any other dorm. As of last Friday, there were 2 double spots open (probably gone), 1 triple spot, and about 15 quad spots open, assuming you’re a guy. So you best ask fast! Each room has its own bathroom, even the doubles. Quads are quads… but they are quite big, I would say twice the size of the normal dorm double. Triples looked miserable and cramped to me. Doubles are pretty darn big and have their own bathroom, but I ended up choosing a quad because as of right now the only doubles options are downstairs isolated near the restaurant. Each room was newly renovated (2011) so it’s clean and somewhat new.

Community Rooms: There’s a study room on the ground floor, lounge on the second floor… or should I say the roof, and a nice little TV area on the fourth floor. Oh, and there’s a community kitchen if you’re into cooking.

Price: Cheaper than the dorms. I believe doubles are $1099, triples are $899 (they suck), and quads are $999 monthly.

Verdict: In my opinion, it is the best residence hall style living off-campus. The other option would be the Wesley House if you enjoy living suite style… but that wasn’t quite my cu p of tea.

As far as the freshman number goes, they assured me that there are usually quite a few freshman. And seeing as Cal overbooked their housing by 500, I feel like there are going to be a lot of other freshmen like me. Hope to see you there!

Thanks for that detailed response

Do u think more freshmen than shown in this pic will be living there this year. And it’s funny how they’re mostly white despite berkeley being like half asian

I really couldn’t say… but I know for a fact that there will be at least one! ;D Guessing that people will probably drop out of Bowles and triples and look for places to stay… which would perhaps lead to the Berk

There are others too. We toured this one on Cal Day. [Telegraph Commons, A Private Residence for UC Berkeley Students and Affiliates](http://www.telegraphcommons.com/)

I hear its dirty or something^

Does anyone know how much closet/dresser space you get in the triples at the Berk? Also, does each student get a desk?

Telegraph Commons didn’t seem dirty to us, lots of nice kids living there, etc. They’d be more than happy to give you a tour, I’m guessing.

sbcalmom - I know that every student get’s the following there after my talks with their professional staff: One desk with detachable hutch, one bookshelf, one three drawer dresser, and one bed. The closet space is shared in each room, so depending on the occupancy of the room, this could be sufficient for some, but maybe not others. The closet’s were pretty large though, considering it is a college residence hall, because when I was in school you couldn’t change your mind in my own personal closet! Hope that helps.

Thanks, UCBDAD! My daughter will be in a triple in the Berk.

Hey, Im actually looking to move to a double at the berK! do you think its worth throwing away a unit 2 offer(mini suite) for this?
