The Best Online Photo Storage

LilD’s friend spilled some lemonade on my laptop today and fortunately it survived. But it got me thinking of the thousands of pictures I have stored on it. (I have most of my older pictures backed up on an external hard drive and have to add the newer ones to it.)

Do any of you store your pictures on an online storage site? Which one is the best one? Free? or Low cost?

I use SmugMug, which has an annual fee. It stores photos at full resolution, and I like the whole set-up and different options for viewing photos, and keeping them private. Most people like flickr, but SmugMug is more intuitive and easier to use, for me.

I haven’t figured out how to store videos in the cloud, so I’d love recs for that.

Google’s Picasa is free and it provides free photo editing software that is good and easy to use once you get familiar with it. It has a “feel lucky” option that you can click and the software makes all the necessary changes but you can edit a photo with specific options if you prefer. You can make photo albums public or private and send specific people links to see your photos.

I have used Picasa to upload all my photos from my computer hard drive to the photos section of my gmail account. I make the albums private and then send links to people who I want to see the pictures. Some times I let people add pictures to the albums.

I also use Picasa to edit and print pictures when necessary.

[Picasa 3: Free download from Google](http://picasa.google.com/)

I believe brother (who is much more technologically savvy than I) uses Picasa and Snapfish. I’ve been using KodakGallery for quite a few years. It was free until about a year ago–no annual fee, but they do require you buy at least $10 worth of stuff/year. (Not a burden for me–I often give mugs/calendars/. . . from their site.) (Which reminds me–time to order that Fathers Day present!)

I don’t store photos, videos or other sensitive data/information on the Cloud outside of a few pictures in the private area of my web site that’s used for sending stuff from one family member to another. I do backup onto a 2TB disk at my office and by coping photo and video files to other computers.

I’m considering moving my email off of gmail to something local with off-site (but not net-accessible) storage.

Yes, I’m not so sure about storing “in the cloud” with all of the potential security problems.
I use Picasa but I think its more of an organizer of the pictures on my computer.

We’ve been a very happy member of Shutterfly for years. Our photos have been stored for almost 10 years that we can always access. There is no fee and never has been

+1 to Picasa & PicasaWeb (the online component). I like it because it’s super cheap ($5 per year gets me oodles of space - a reasonable amount is available free) AND because people can download the full resolution pictures for printing.

I was given a subscription to smug mug for mother’s day. Very easy to use.

I thought there were storage limits at Picasa, so I didn’t think I could store my collection there. Anyway, I backup my hard disk on to a couple of different removable drives and keep one at work.

carbonite. it backs it up automatically and there is no limit. but there is a fee

I like Shutterfly. It’s great for sharing with friends and family, too.

I also use CrashPlan and have used Mozy for online backup.
