The Best School... ever... ?

Georgetown is notorious for being an Ivy-League backup. While this is in no way relevant to my situation, I thought it was worth noting. (I actually applied to Georgetown rather than Harvard because of the earlier’s philosophy…)

At any rate, I was wondering if you all would be willing to expound on the things that make Georgetown wonderful, the best school ever, etc.

I’ve been accepted to a few wonderful universities EA - now its time to start making decisions. I’ve hear the University of Chicago is wonderful by far, that MIT is better than them both…

What I’ve not heard is why Georgetown is fabulous. Your input on that would really help me make my decision. The entire story is important to me. I am not able to visit the schools, so I am forced to have others be my eyes and ears.

Anything would be appreciated. Thanks a million.

Location is a major point. I’ve been up to DC a few times and have had more fun partying/visiting Georgetown there than anywhere else (New York was a close second- but is much colder). Besides the pretty campus and the great nightlife, DC offers amazing internship oppurtunities. I know I sound like a brochure but DC really is a great town. It’s too bad you can’t visit the campus, but trust me when I say it is very beautiful and really has that enclosed campus feel, unlike other city schools like NYU.

The academics are famous for being strong, and the Jesuits are known for their great education. Georgetown is prestigious and, while maybe not at the same level as the top Ivies like Princeton or Yale, will get you a good job if you do well. This should probably be above location, but come on you know Georgetown will be strong in academics.

On top of all this, Georgetown students are very involved in school and politically active, which many people are attracted to. My interviewer told me about the importance of volunteerism and such at Georgetown, which impressed me.

I’m a freshman at Georgetown and I absolutely love it. For me it was definately the right choice. I’m a vietnamese catholic, so I was really attracted to the Jesuit tradition at Georgetown. They don’t ever force spirituality on you while you’re here like some other Catholic colleges but rather invites you to explore it and challenges you to back up your affirmation. The Jesuit Whether you a religious or not, I think there is a great value in the tradition of self reflection that the Jesuits espouse. They are by far some of the coolest people ever with amazing stories and insights. I just met one who trained some of the astronauts for Challenger space program. As an institution, Georgetown really emphasizes issues of social justice and students here not only volunteer but they are active in learning about the issues. The activism on campus is amazing. Unlike other politically active schools, I feel that Georgetown not only has megaphone protests, but we are really educated about the issues and also acting in quiet ways that are making difference. I hang around the center for social justice alot and am always amazed at people who show up there. Everyone from the extroverted Joe hoya to the shy bookworm. Also because of the location some of the most amazing people show up on campus. John Kerry was at mass the other night and I’m sure you’ve heard of Prince Charles coming by. I’m starting to sound like a college brochure but I’m really fanatic about Georgetown.
Of course, Gtown also has some draw backs. Many of the people here are more concerned about appearance than most campuses. I found that wearing pajamas to class was unacceptable, but its not really a big deal. Also because Gtown is a medium sized school, you would have to seek out opportunities rather than have them come to you, like they would at a smaller liberal arts college. However the services are there. I’ve always been able to walk-in and get to see the Dean. But other than that, I really don’t have any major complaints.
P.S. and of course, you can’t deny that D.C. is one of the most amazing cities EVER! in terms of things to do, things you can volunteer in, the people you meet Yah DC! Also, we speak many many languages. Its really cool!

Hey that was a great post ^! In terms of the appearance issue- I have heard a lot about how pretty much everybody at Georgetown is real preppy and dresses real nice. In the College ******* book I read it said that Georgetown has some of the hottest students of anywhere (which is not a bad thing!). It kind of disappointed me at first that I wouldn’t be rolling out of bed and into the classroom, but on second thought just think of all the sexy people we’ll meet…lol. But anyways, the post above me just affirmed my excitement about Georgetown!

That made me really excited about Georgetown too! (Even though I still need to get in! Fingers crossed).
Also, Andrew, if you go to http://www.hoyasaxa.com/sports/traditions/tour.htm</a> there is an online tour that shows some aspects of Georgetown. I can’t believe I’m admitting how much of a dork I am, but sometimes I go to Webshots and type in “Georgetown” or “Georgetown Campus” and a lot of pictures of the campus come up. You might want to check these out since you’re not able to go visit.
Another thing that is cool about Georgetown is how fondly alumni look back on their experience there. My parents went to Georgetown and now whenever we’re with their Georgetown friends all they do is sing the fight song and talk about Gtown. At every wedding I’ve been to, all the Hoyas stand up and sing the fight song. I love how they are all so passionate about their alma mater.

I DO THAT 24/7!!! I’m actually visiting gtown next weekend, and I feel like I already know everyone there!

After Nozick and Rawls died, Harvard’s Philosophy department became a shadow of what it once was… It still has a few big players, but I agree with ada601’s decision.

what is so unique and wonderful about the university is its beauty as an institution - the architecture is just amazing.
the day i visited gu, i arrived an hour early, and decided to wander. i went into Healy (the amazing building with the clock tower) and walked up to the brass library. now, i hear that hardly any students go into the brass library and it is not on the tour or anything, but if you ever have a chance to check it out - DO SO! I was there early in the morning on a beautiful day. I was completely alone in a quiet library. The library gives a cozy and grand feeling at the same time - I’m an athiest, but I felt as if I had stepped into something holy - something worthy of immense respect, something inspiring. It was brass, with deep red contrasting it, lined with books and spiral staircases everywhere. I stepped up a spiral staircase and looked out the window - I saw a view of Washington DC I will never, ever forget. Think of the most beautiful, picturesque view of DC, with sun streaming from behind the washington memorial, and you’ve got it. It was amazing.

Georgetown inspires me. I, like you, cannot visit schools I’ve applied to, but I had a chance to visit two other schools. There is something special about Georgetown - something magical and laden with history, that makes it a wonderful atmosphere to learn.

Figured everyone else can handle the facts, now. Just figured I’d give you glimpse of what I saw when I visited.

That is simply not true. Harvard still has several heavyweights: Hilary Putnam, Christine Korsgaard, Stanley Cavell, and Warren Goldfarb.

hey, georgetown was firston my list as well…above the Ivys. I had to put up a fight with my parents because they figured I’d just go to Columbia or dartmouth. I love Gu for the sfs. It;s basically the only shcol with such a program. granted, columbia has the school of international and public affairs, but that’s a graduate school.
