The best US city to start from the bottom, make it to the top?

Yep, that’s right! If you wanted to forget this college hoopla, forget formal education, start your life at the bottom and make it to the top, which city would you move to? Which city would be most open to such Scarface-type ambitions, and why? Especially through illegal activities. This includes living a lifestyle of complete debauchery.

Miami? (become a drug lord?)
an area of New York? (maybe too closed up if not educated?)
an area of Los Angeles? (movie industry?)
Vegas? (make it big gambling??)
or any other suggestions…

No, this is not exactly for me, but it’s a fun thought to play with. ^_^

This is a great question… Unfortunately I can’t think of any answers. I was thinking like Colombian (clearly not in the U.S.) drug lord, or be born into a really rich family (but that wouldn’t be bottom, of course)… Hmm, I’ll have to think about this, it’s a neat idea.

Well, Miami would be the obvious answer back in the 70s but maybe not anymore. I was watching a documentary about a guy who moved down there with basically nothing, he started dealing cocaine and was making 50k per week just starting off. Then he started importing it and did even better; I’m not sure where else you have that kind of opportunity… I’m not sure how the scene is today though, I know the city is a lot safer now but that may simply be because the Colombians wiped out their competition… The mafia is in Miami too, if you walk past the right Italian restaurant on Ocean Dr. in South Beach you’ll see a bunch of jacked ****ed off looking affluent Italian guys sitting outside for dinner. For a civilian they pose no threat but if you’re trying to get into organized crime watch out.
